I am trying to get a general idea on the fuel range of my 2003 Superhawk. I was originally told it was about 280km give or take depending on riding style but someone from another forum said I would be lucky to get 180km.

 

Low to mid 40's (miles) during easy steady cruising, low 30's riding aggressively, in my experience.

280km?!? Perhaps down hill. A big hill. YMMV but my gas light goes on at about 110 miles or so. If I rode to the last drop maybe I could get 160 miles (260km). I think you actually get a lcd gauge on the 2003? In any case prudence suggests not pushing much past 200km

 

I've only gone until the low fuel light came on a couple of times, but it's been 110 to 120 miles both times (or about 180 to 190 clicks).

 

Depends so much on how you ride. In a test I did of very restrained steady state highway cruising, I got better than 21 km. per liter with my '03. For all around semi aggressive riding, getting 80% or a bit more of that is pretty good.

 

Thanks guys, it sounds like the 180km range was about right then...I was hoping for a little more but it is what it is right. I did not buy a carburated bike for the fuel economy.

Another question I have is how far can you actually go on the "reserve" tank. I know that once the light comes on there is not very much fuel left but does that mean I need to pull over immediately or just find the next gas station within the next several miles or so. I do not want to run out while on the hwy between stations.

 

If your fuel gauge is accurate, reserve is 2.67 liters. You can do the additional math.

 

I've been 20 miles on reserve before. I think i went about 153 miles on that tankful.

 

Exactly how far you can go on reserve is one of those questions you'd rather not know the answer to.

 

I've run out. Going a bit too fast into a headwind. Ran out 3 km before the gas station I was planning to stop at!

 

My bike takes about 3.5 gallons when I get gas ASAP after the warning light comes on.

My light comes on at 115 plus or minus (mostly minus when I'm going faster than usual)

if you squeeze it to the last drop you can pull out thirty miles from the reserve, don't ask me how I know. Once I had no choice because there was no gas for a while, and once I ran it out of gas, oops. I usually see 120 to 130 ,before the light if I am on a ride, 100 if I end up stuck in town the whole tank.

 

I make 3 36 mile round trips to work and maybe a 12 mile round trip (est. 120 total) to the store and then fill up. I usually put 3.4 to 3.7 gallons in it. I've run it dry twice (no gauges/lights) and coasted into gas stations twice more and it takes 4.0 when I do that.

One of those run-dry instances was the start of the 4th trip to work; at least I ran out on the down side of the hill. Still sucked shwetty ***** pushing that beast up the exit ramp to the gas station. The worst part was, I knew I was low but didn't think I had time to fill up. Hmm, 5 extra minutes to get gas or an extra half hour to push it to the station. Probly should have filled up first.

 

I average around 40 MPG or so if I stay out of it or just lug around town.. If I ride agreesive, mid-30's or so. Not bad fuel economy either way for this kind of bike IMO. Besides it runs on good ole 87 like a champ!
