170 miles to the tank!

hey guys, figured youde like this. ..

last weekend, i went to columbus ohio to visit a friend. well last sunday morning i hit 71 north and went straight towards my hometown of cleveland. 10 miles into my trip i ran into a biker gang all drabbed in leather, with a patch reading "warthogs motorcycle club of NY". i decided to follow them as their pace was about 80-95mph in a 65mph zone. an hour or so went going by and i noticed i hit over 100 miles with no red light of death! usually it his around 105 or so. well, long story short, i followed these guys all the way up to my exit, wondering how we didnt get a ticket. staying in the left lane and NEVER budging, we chugged along as they led me and then for about 30 miles i led them in my red hawk.

just as i got off the exit i gave them a salute and looked down to see the red light just turned on at 165 miles! i could have gone 10-15 more! and to think i have a k&n filter and MIG high mounts.
we hit no traffic, never got out of 6th gear more than two times... shows how much gas we waste in stop and go and goofing off. just figured youde wanna know.

I guess that's what 155 miles of drafting can do. Wow!

oh yeah, and their club rules to become a member according to their site are this :

"We are not affiliated with Harley Davidson nor any other motorcycle company. However, in support of American made motorcycles, we require our members to own and operate a V-twin motorcycle manufactured by a North American Owned Company."

well darnit, atleast we have one of the criteria! maybe thats why they liked my rumble so much!

Speaking of the little red light, how much gas in left in the tank when it comes on? Is it the .7 of reserve?

Wow! That must be a record for a Superhawk! No doubt the draft helped and the steady pace is important too! I have a jetted 98 and my little red light comes on at just under a hundred miles and driving like I usually do - I can go 18 miles until I'm dry.

I now own Superbling's "extended range gas tank" for a reason.

yeah, typically light comes on 98miles - 111miles on mine. jetted out 175-180 2.5 turns 5th clip. the consensus seems to be 20miles left to the tank when the RLOD(red light of death) comes on.

Did you raise your compression ?? IDK how you went so far, but it's nice !
My absolute record is 145, steady, slow, leaned on the bike, avoiding to breathe too hard

oh it is, i did it . was actually testing out my new sirius radio mounted on clutch mount bolts. i was freaking out cus i thought the rlod was broke... but nope... just constant speed, no butterflies twitchin in the carb throats= mileage heaven. i mean i opened the throttle a couple times in 6th gear when a vehicle moved into the right lane out of the way and the warthogs wanted to get up to 90mph from 70, but thats it. stock tank for me .

To near the damn inch! Mine comes on religiously at 98 and I'm bone dry 18 miles later!

All I know is when i get to about 95-105 and the red light comes on, I don't feel like pushing so I get fuel then.

In 6th gear these bikes are pretty damn efficient. especially if you have the stock gearing. I can absolutely see that as possible.

I'm not sure it was a true 170 unless you have a speedo healer. Even the stock odo. is not totally accurate.
If it's about 10% off that is still great range if we could do that all the time.

I do a lot of commuting for work and I ride very casually the good majority of the time. My bike is completely stock and I always get 120-130 miles before the indicator light comes on.

I've had my Hawk 3 weeks now. I've gotten 37 to 43 mpg every tank.
Yesterday 128 miles and it took 3.17 gallons to fill her up = 40 mpg
Bike is stock exceot for D+D slip ons, don't know about carb settings havent checked.

I think they made the tank this small on purpose so we wouldn't notice that they stuffed the seat with plywood.

no compression raising and stock gearing as well..my brother has a buell thunderbolt s3(when they were beasts with a classic tube frame) and his odometer is analog and we rode the same 110 mile trip(according to my odo) next to each other and his bike had 15 more miles than mine. . . it was weird. and as for dr pepper's comment on my pipes... they have to be the loudest or one of the loudest pipes available for the hawk. yes, they are french , but they sure sound bad ***!!! i get compliments all the time of people saying its an unbelievable sound, as im sure all of you have as well. after all, what other jap bike(not italy) has this fine note?

LMAO at this phrasing. We buy a lot of aftermarket North American Owned company full V-Twin motors from 3 of the US manufacturers. Not one is made in the American continent. Ditto transmissions.

The 40% of Harley Davidson that is made in Mexico is still considered North America.
