What causes 183 whp?
My buddy bought a 2001 r1 a couple years back that had been raced out. He paid like 2k for it. He had it dyno'd this week and it put out 183hp at the wheel! from what ive read the do 134 whp stock. The company that did the dyno said they are 90% sure the cams are stock. What could have been done to his carbureted bike to make that kind of power? And at 5000ft in elevation? Maybe bored? What do you guys think?

Well... They have 150 at the crank ie around 134 or so at the rearwheel stock... That much is correct...
But to get 183 at the wheel, you need 200-210 at the crank... Add the 10-15% for the altitude and you get 240-250 at the crank...
Now I have seen figures like that on a 2000'ish R1... But that needed a turbo to make that power... There is no way in hell that a R1 will make those figures without one... 200 or so at the crank possibly, but not 250...
And to get those figures you would need to sink a boatload of cash into it... And you would not pick that up for 2k, doesn't matter how ragged it looks... With that engine in a bike it would take an absolute moron not to part the bike and sell the engine alone for twice that or more...

I think you got it there, Mick! Nothing like all these morons that want to show up and dyno every Friday night after they change the oil. If I had a dyno I would do it too. Give me a hundred bux and you can ride my merry-go-round. You'll love it. Then you can brag to your buddys.

might have been run in a lower gear, second vs 4th for example and it would have more power, but still not enough to increase it by 50. as for wheelies, ive got buddies on liter bikes that rip 3rd and 4th gear no clutch wheelies no problem

To get a car without a prayer of passing a smog check to pass, an unscrupulous smog check technician will "clean pipe" it...running another car that he knows will pass...like his own. This will be done for a slight fee, of course.

I don't know about the 183 hp, but when my Great Mechanic (Bart @ Faster Motorsports, Denver, Co) tuned and dyno'd my 03 SH after my stage II jet kit, I showed 103 hp. I was planning a trip to Cali to ride up the coast to Motogp at Laguna Seca. I said, "wow, this should really rip when I get it to California. I should be looking at nearly 120 hp!"
Sorry to burst your bubble, Bart says, but the dyno is corrected. That's what you'd get if you were already at sea level, in the dyno's estimation. You aren't getting that here!

The Aprilia Mille stock can pull the front up in 4'th no problem, and 5'th with a bit of coaxing, and that's "only" 146 at the crank...

I agree, the wheelies isn't a very accurate dyno tool... A stock VTR is capable of 3'rd gear power wheelies... It's more about where you have the weight (The VTR is heavy in the **** as stock) and technique... When it was roadtested in 97 several magazines dubbed it a "monowheel"...

Second, it might be showing corrected numbers for sea level. In which case if it is bored and has high comp pistons might be possible.
Third, 183 whp is like a dissease. When mixed with a lack of common sense it can cause a serious rash, brain damage, memory loss, and death.
