Tickets and Cops

Yesterday I am crusing along jus relaxing. I am making pretty good time and then I come to the stop light and realize that there is a cop car behnd me. I turn the corner and he pulls me over. Clocked me at 67mph in a 35mph zone

First thing I do is take off my helmet. Then he asks me if I know how fast I was going. I reply that honestly I wasn't paying attention. Checks my lisence and regestration gives me a lecture and then lets me go.

Why did he let me go without a ticket?

My psychology teacher told us a few years back that people have problems punishing others for wrong actions they did unknowlingly.

I think that this worked, or could be the cop got laid the night before

What kinds of tickets have you gotten out of?

None. Never got out of a ticket. I guess in that respect, I'm three for three.

But, I have been able to get two of them dropped in court.

Perhaps some cops just enjoying you sweat it out.

Experienced LEO's are generally really good at "reading" people. You were honest and he knew it.

Back when I had my first SuperHawk, I did the same but it was MUCh worse. Doing a "1/4" mile run on a stop sign on a rural road. Was over 120 when I had to back off when I caught up with a car. Check my rearviews before passing the car and saw the lights way back there. He had been running me down since the last little town about 10 miles back! Holy Crap. Why he let me off with a warning is still beyond me.

I think being honest and having a lot of gray hair when I pulled the helmet off (along with full gear which is very uncommon here) helped a lot.

YMMV,

Doug

Re: Tickets and Cops

I got out of a street racing ticket in my Mustang GT. Wasn't really racing cause the camaro beside me saw the cop and didn't go.

last fall, I purposely cut off a cop in my car, and did not get a ticket.

Re: Tickets and Cops

Well, I guess I cursed myself "bragging" in this thread.

Got popped in town for 48 in a 30 on a curve. Cop was real cool about it. Walked right passed me standing behind the SuperHawk and removing my helmet to check out the bike, wanted to know "how fast is it and how big is it?" etc., and he didn't give me any lectures.

The whole time I thought he was going to let me off.

Once I was driving from Atlanta to Miami at night - about a 10-hour drive. I was driving a friend's Mitsubishi 3000GT - quite a beast, doing steady 120 in a 70 zone. This cop was on the side of the road, and I see him going after me. My radar detector didn't fire... So I get pulled over, and start thinking about jail time, etc. (speeding laws are no joke in Georgia, I guess). So he takes my papers, goes to his car, then drives up next to me, gives me my license back and says - "today's your lucky day, I just got an emergency call. Don't speed no more", and speeds off. Whoa... almost never happens like this. I stopped speeding this much since. And I never fully trust in any radar detector no more.

Re: Tickets and Cops

I'm nervous about this coming season because last year I never got got and sped like a maniac.

Only ever talked my way out of one speeding ticket. It was a long straight stretch, on my way skiing with two buds and I was winding it out. Oncoming cop miles down the road blocks the road off. This was a a license suspending moment. I just out of the car to run up to him trying to whip up some tears (18 at the time) when a car flys by. The cop meets me on the road half way between our two cars and I point at the speeding car and say "That guy tried to run me off the road! Go get him!" Well I think the other car had two old couples in it and the cop wasn't quite sure what to do. He lets me go and heads off after the other car. I turn tail and split. My buddies were agog.

Re: Tickets and Cops

couple years back i was popped for passing 2 cars on the right to turn down my street, traffic is always backed up at this one point. i get pulled over on my interceptor by an evil kenevil on a harley. asks why i passed on the right, and at that moment, the ungodly sound of a softail winding to about 6 grand goes whipping by the side street me and the kind officer are on. he proceeds to tell me to have a nice day and goes after the harley. poor sap, must have passed about 30 cars!

Re: Tickets and Cops

Gotta agree with Superbling on the gray hair thing!
Got stopped last Sunday by a county cop. I made sure to whip my KBC off ASAP so he could see right away I wasn't just another young punk on a sportbike (uhh, oops, sorry guys!)
Anyway, the silver-haired constable check my license & remarked how we were both born in the same year & that he rode a Harley & that he wasn't gonna write me up. Oh well, one out of 2 ain't bad.
Better keep the eyes up now!

Thumbs up to the gray hair loop-hole! Here's another success story. I was riding 2-up, stop at a light; a souped-up Subaru WRX STi pulls up next - he's like - let's race! I have a passenger that is 170 pounds... But I remembered the stats for the STi - 0-60 in 4.6 secs so I figure I can take him : ) Green light - off we go - I'm consistently ahead but a front wheel off the ground. So when going at about 85 mph (in a 45), I see in the mirror the guy suddenly slams the breaks and turns right. Next thing I know - a cop on a bike behind me. We stop; he asks for DL, sees that motorcycle endorsement on my license - okay. I tell him a story about smoking a Subaru - he's like - what Subaru? And your license plate light - he says - is out. (well it's not out - it's just not there - having the mud-guard cut off). I take off the helmet. Probably my hair turned gray at the moment - so he let me go. : )

I suspect your passenger's the one with the grey hair now! Knowing what I know, don't think I'd ever ride two up with anyone...guess i don't have enough faith in my fellow man.
