My latest project

Since we have a pretty good size crowd of modders, I thought I'd show ya'll my project VFR. Although mild by many standards, it's the wildest thing I've ever done.

Basically, it's a 96 VFR750F main frame/engine/tank with 2003 CBR600RR front bodywork, CBR600F4i forks/fender/triples, GSXR1000 6 piston brakes, and superbike bar kit. For the rear, I grafted on a 2002 VFR VTEC subframe and seat along with LeoVince CF pipes mated to a now rare Two Brothers SS full header. The forks are full race tech'ed and the shock is a wilbers triple clicker.

It's still in the "roller" status but I'm pretty jazzed. I hope to have it running within a month or so.

That's pretty cool. Any idea how many pounds you shaved, if any?

you've made the interceptor actually look desirable! I might even say, exciting. nice job - I wish honda would follow your lead.

'Mild'?
Jeez, are you British? J/K.
But, seriously, that's some definite tongue-in-cheek, there.
Nice bike, too.

That almost makes me want to put a fairing back on my bike.
Nice work, but could we please see a shot or two from the front ?
I have to agree with cliby, that bike looks desirable, even if it does have too many cylinders.

This is the only front photo I have at the moment. It's with the first edition RC45 tail cowl/gsxr sargent seat I originally wanted to go with but the combo was too problematic for me. Eagle eyes will note the left mid cowling isn't on for the pic.

Thanks for all positive feedback guys. It makes all the hot hours in the garage instead of riding much easier.

That's damned groovy. How well did the bodywork fasten to the frame?

That's one of the coolest things about this project, the side fairings bolt on to the stock vfr mounts at THREE of the four points. How cool is that? At the two mid-points (near the knees), I only had to rotate the frame brackets a tad. The left bottom, by the kickstand, is the only one that isn't close. So I drilled a new hole in the gray lower to match. No biggie since they had to be trimmed to clear the centerstand anyway(remember those?). No issues with exhaust clearances.

I had to use the aluminum 600rr upper fairing stay instead of the huge steel vfr stay. So I lost some serious weight there but that meant either seriously modding the stock instruments or get something else. I chose the later and went with aftermarket.

On the rear end, no modding was needed for the bodywork since it's a VTEC tail and seat mounted on a VTEC subframe. The major modding there was mating the VTEC subframe to the older VFR main frame.

On the weight question, besides the savings on the stay and instruments, I reduced the number of front fairing pieces from 15 down to 9. I'm also going with a 520 chain/sprockets and a SS header with CF cans to offset the heavier VTEC subframe. It's heavy duty because not only was it designed for heavy stock underseat pipes but also factory hard bags+passenger. In the future, I'd like to get a sweet aluminum copy of the subframe made.

Umm, you mean like this?

Personally down here in the deep south, I'd be worried about air flow over the rads since this bike is from Norway or some such and doesn't have to deal with real heat but you should have room for an extra rad in the stock 600rr location that would now be covered.

I don't like the MV Augusta tail tho'. Otherwise, one sweet VTR.

Just remember that there is only one person that has to like your bike........
Seeing other's ideas materialized is way cool and is what what is so great about this site.
It's given me ideas, such as Superblings VFR tank mod and RC51 muffler installation.

Personally I like my bikes naked and I like to be able to see what makes them go.
The VTR's engine is one of the reasons I went through the trouble of hiding the radiator under the seat.

Thanks to everbody that can't leave well enough alone and gives us ideas and inspiration.

I'm not sure how I missed the original posting of this but this is a really good looking project. I have a 97 that I bought a year ago with 2967 miles on it. What a great update to the look!

Bling, yours is better than the the SH, fo sho. That SH looks so damn long. Even with your 4 cylinders, it's still a V, plus it really does look wicked cool.. or sick.. or something like that.

Never! Talk about a PITA. I've got a new found respect for custom builders, even those OCC clowns.

Confessed bike *****, I tend to buy used every couple of years; often repeat model purchases but due to family constraints, I've reached the eventual decision that I need a long term bike. So, I've decided to "make" the bike I want but one that I can still mess with and hopefully improve upon later down the line. IOW, this bike will never be "finished".

Yea, I think most custom builders feel like you.... There will always be somthing to tweek down the line.. never quite done. I feel that way with my home re-model.... no more tileing/grouting... please

Update:

Now a full fledge runner. I've only put about 150 miles on her and still need to do lots of little detail things (put mirror spacers and throttle lock on last night) but she's basically complete! Started back in April selling and buying parts and then spent most of May/June putting it all together. The best part is I did it all in my garage with a vice, grinding wheel, drill, calipers, and two dremels (burned one completely up!) in addition to basic hand tools.

Here's some more pics of it:

I'm going to go back down on rear sprocket (-1/+2 right now) as it's geared too high for my tastes (constantly looking for 7th) with the 520 setup from scum ofallparts.com

The ancestory of the front fairing has me puzzled. Care to enlighten me? Looks like a PITA combination of CBR and VFR? How much fiberglass work had to be done to make this happen? Looks really good. I caught some earlier pix on VFRD the other night. I wondered about this project when you announced that you had started it. Nice job! Congrats on the build and I wouldn't put it anyplace near the pathetic **** coming out of OCC. PM with the details on the 02!

THANKS guys!

You'll be surprised to know that the front end bodywork is entirely 600rr including fairing stay with relatively minor mods to fit. I was able to utilized all four stock VFR mounting points. No fiberglass or any of that kind of work needed! The instruments are aftermarket.

Adding the VTEC rear end including subframe was more involved than the front. The only non-factory home-made items are the side covers I had to make. I guess I could have left them bare since the frame looks good behind them but I didn't like seeing the wiring harness on one side and fuel lines/filter on the other.

So except for them, I can get spares at any honda dealer.
