I bought another bike.... and I can't believe I did it
Man, I was beginning to think that I would keep the VTR forever and never be able to afford anything to replace it that I really liked. I keep my stuff for a long time and since I don't bounce around to different bikes I need to make sure that it's something I'll still want in 5, 10, or more years from now.
Well, here it is. I brought this baby home today I'm still in shock. I threw out a low-ball offer and they took... plus they knocked off $100 because it didn't have a battery to go with it (the one used to start it up belonged to a different bike). Little did they know it takes the same battery as the VTR and I have a brand new one sitting in the box on my shelf. As you can tell it's far from perfect, but for someone with my budget to be able to own a piece of equipment like this is nothing short of incredible.
Now, to get it ready for Mid-Ohio.....

Well... It doesn't look to be much more than cosmetic damage... The fairing isn't cheap on a Ducati, but it's a lot cheaper than other parts, and a good bit cheaper than buying a pristine bike...
The tail and tank will probably be alright with paintwork only... The side of the fairing possibly the same... If you are doing it on a budget you could get away with only replacing the top part around the light...
God damn you I'm jealous... Well... May by not... I'm to tall to fit comfortably and it's not a tourer and I'd be scared to modify it... Can you tell I'm trying to console myself?!
One day I'm buying that Mille I have been eying...

I think I got a killer deal on it - $5400. The clutch is trashed, which is common considering how they stick out the side like that. It's also got a few other mechanical problems that will keep it from being ridded for a while, but all of them are minor. It fires right up and sounds wicked. Pretty much imagine a VTR on steriods and there you have it. I will be riding it with the fairings like that at first, I really don't care about a few scratches. It will need an upper fairing, fairing stay and mirror/turn signal at minimum before I can ride it.
The VTR isn't going away, that's for sure. I feel totally lucky that I was able to get the 1098 without having to sell the VTR to do it. It's probably going to take me the better part of the year to get the money to fix it up, so the VTR will continue to be my daily rider. Plus, I still have a lot more things I want to do with it. You'd think after 11 years I'd be done but I keep finding new things to do.

It was 2 hours away so the drive down there was nerve-racking. The whole way home I kept saying to my buddy that I couldn't believe it was true. He's excited, but not that much becuse he's on his second 1098, both purchased new.

a 1098 streetfighter.... that would be so awesome!
or just rebuild it on the cheap.. a flat black 1098 would be nice too...
but none of those solution will be as valuable than the stock bike...

Yeah, I'm not going to turn it into a streetfighter. Those look cool but it's not me. In fact, I'm going to un-do some of the stuff on it and return it closer to stock. The exhaust will stay, of course, but the LED tail light and license plate relocator will be replaced with stock parts. That's right, I'm putting the rear fender back on. I'm hoping that I can find someone who will trade me even-up for the aftermarket parts that I have.
Lots of work to do and lots of parts to buy. For now it just sits, and it's going to kill me not to be able to ride it. Oh well, all in due time.
