Oh yeah, those are real flames! Integrated signals in the mirrors. Yep, more flames... "Krator" taillight courtesy of feebay Hand stitched flames on the seat.
Lol, yep. last registered 2011, sat since then n a "shed."
The fuel was so bad I almost couldn't stand to pull the pump. I'll post some pics of that later but...it runs. I got it fired up last night. Me thinks an ADV bike is in order.
I dragged home a '94 FZR1000 that sat for years and like an idiot poured the toxic waste that was in the gas tank into some shrubs. About 5 years later there's still a very distinct bald spot where nothing will ever grow again for the next 100 years, or whatever the half life of 10 year old gasoline is.
Crazy thing is how much time and money were probably put into that CBR with all the chrome and polishing, only to let it sit outside and rust. I've finally started working on the FZR as time allows over the last couple months. I prefer to do projects completely *** backwards and make them look pretty first, then find out whether little things like the engine are still good or not lol.
Ahhhhh that joyous day of stripping down everything that doesn't belong and creating that giant pile of trash on the way to making things right again lol. What are your plans for it?
I'm having a blast so far. I'm not sure yet what to do. I'm a little burned out on accurate restoration and hp mods after the V, but I think with this one I can undo all the garbage and it let it take form on its own. After tear down I'll bring the frame, swingarm and fork tubes back to satin black put the motor back in and take it a month at a time. In open to suggestions and I know. For sure that I want a bike that I can take literally anywhere. So sport tires are out for sure.
Mos_def the wheels. I think the gray wheels off my hawk will fit nicely! I'm told you can sand chrome an use good primer and you'll be able to paint it with no issues..anyone tried it?
Geez I was thinking if that's all chrome they must've spent a fortune... Is it in good shape or is it pitted? Crazy to do all that and then not take care of it. If you were selling the bike I'd say if it's pretty nice just to detail the heck out of it. Not my thing but it does look nice if it's spotless with say some nice stock/stock style paint & graphics. But if you're keeping it definitely make it to your tastes. Chrome sucks. It looks beautiful when it's perfect but otherwise I hate it. At least if it were polished you could easily shine it back up or refinish it. But once chrome starts pitting you're screwed. Only experience I have with trying to paint over it was once sanding it down some, priming and painting a shitty set of old Cragar wheels to sell. They looked pretty good but I'm sure you'd want a higher standard. Don't they have acid baths for removing it? Jesus doing that right manually is probably going to be ALOT of work.
There's a hard chrome plating place near me that can remove chrome too. Thats much cheaper for sure. The chrome on this bike sucks just like all chrome. Its cheap and flaking with pit marks and impurities everywhere. Ghastly is the word.
Well, it's all tore down to the frame. I watched a few videos of prepping chrome for paint and it is doable. A lot of sanding , the issue is when you get pitting...you kind of have to just keep sanding that one area until all of the poor substrate is exposed. Definitely takes a while, no biggy though, another free bike another year of my life and so it goes.
I wish I had the time to search for a guy that could just sandblast the **** out of it but whatevs...it is what it is. It just means that I have one more reason to get a stretched swingarm. Anyhoo:
Ok, so for the first time in 10 years it runs under its own power!
FYI, I am running a Kemso brand fuel pump from ebay. It's quiet and the install was no different than any other aside from the electrical plug being different. I replaced the filter with an off the shelf Wix filter. I cut the elbow off the old filter and added a section of hose...much cheaper. Runs friggin mint!
