Earth Quake

Well we had one hell of an earth quake here in SD (that's San Diego). Epicenter was in Baja Ca. about 40 miles away registered 7.2
We were rocking and rolling for about 20-30 seconds.

I was sitting on my front porch in Long Beach, wondering why I was feeling dizzy when I realized that it was actually an earthquake.
What tipped me off was my truck rolling back and forth for what seemed like a minute.

Our house was floating side to side here in San Clemente, 50 miles north of San Diego. We have a pair of small birds nesting on the cable box under our eve in the backyard. They were freaked out for a couple of hours afterwards. They were probably feeling the aftershocks that we didn't notice.

I've always heard that animals will notice them first, but none of our three cats either noticed or cared, so much for early warning......

Having been born in Los Angeles in 1946, I've experienced many earthquakes. My first was the Tehachapi Earthquake of 1952. I woke up to feel the room shaking and my dresser moving across the floor.

After the Long Beach Earthquake of 1933, building codes in California were beefed up heavily. Mainly, unreinforced masonry is not allowed.

Long rolling Quake. Felt like the house was floating on water for about a minute or two.

I'm still in Monterrey, Mexico. Many miles from Baja. There was a period today, when I felt that strange loss of equllibrium you get in a mild earthquake, but could not tell if it actually was. Maybe that was it?

Back in the early 80's I was driving in Los Angeles and while stopped at an intersection, I thought my car was idling funny. The rough idle turned out to be a small temblor.

The Whittier Narrows quake of 1987 convinced me to move my wife and I back to Hawaii, where the quakes are gentler.

I'm surprised it was felt strongly up here. I was working in the garage and had an ever so slight wobble. Wasn't even sure it was a quake, then again, I've slept through a 5.0

I know it was felt here in Phoenix too. I was napping when it hit though so I didn't notice it.

I was washing my truck at my house in Temecula and I didn't feel a damn thing!! I have been known to be kind of oblivious to these sorts of things :P
