Daytona Bike Week
Daytona Bike Week
Hey guys just wondering if anyone from here is going down to Daytona this year for bike week? Or has anybody been there if so how is it?
Just curious because me and a couple buddies are thinking about going. It looks like tons of fun, tons of nice bikes, nice weather and hott girls!!

I've attended Daytona Bike Week since '75, it's changed over and over again. Used to be a small gathering of just 8,000 or so, now it's half a million by some estimates. By changes I mean that in the day it was motorcyclists gathering to commune and watch the races, attend the custom show and stroll the beach. Now days it's obnoxious commercialism, open pipes and beer gut riders making fools of themselves to the monetary delight of the police.
The 200 race is always interesting on the last sunday, but the really good stuff is the AHRMA during the week leading up to it. In Deland, at Stetson University is the annual auction. Sometimes the rare and unusual is up for bidding. Last year, at the museum in Daytona, was the Guggenheim traveling exhibit 'The Art of the Motorcycle', a really must see, a once in a lifetime chance to look at iron in one place from all historical periods and places.
Hott girls? Bring cash and condoms, you aren't allergic to penicillin, are you? To be sure, spring break abuts bike week, but the co-eds are being pursued by frat boys in a ratio of 10:1.
The hotels double their rates for the week and are usually booked in advance, if you intend to camp, make your reservations now. Often marques have accomodations for club members. When I was on German machinery I camped with BMWOA or the Sunshine Riders.
A heads up. As you get closer to Daytona, the Fla Highway Patrol and all of the other law enforcement agencies will have intensified speed patrols on all of the approaches coming in and will be supported by aircraft.

Sounds like a great time
i've thought about doing it as well. I've come to grips with the fact that Laconia is a much more reasonable prospect. not to thread jack, but how is it in NH normally. I've never been up despite growing up in southern NH.

Intensified is putting it lightly. IMHO it isnt worth it. Its a lot of people watching. The loop is probably the best twisty road there, and the cops station thereself out there during bikeweek.

I did Bike Week back in 87' & 88'. I was a young lad. It was mostly H-Ds back then. Not too many Rice-burners. I backed into a spot on Main St. with all the H-Ds and the guy standing there said "you ain't planning on leaving your bike here are you?"
I said "well yea". I wasn't planning on sitting there the whole time. He told me it might not be a good idea. But that was back then, I'm sure lots have changed.

been there done that
girls not so much
it's kind of a warm fuzzy black and orange family thing
it does beat the blues for MI winters though
it's like going to the zoo. check it all out.
it's a trick to find parking that doesn't cost $5

I'm thinking I'll put in an appearance this time. Not sure how much cruiser madness I can take. Mostly I do a ride about and then hang out at the Hess station on US 92 and I-95. That's kinda the sportbike watering hole.
Bike Week - Great Group
I've been going every year, and it's crazy how I see new bikes everytime. Im getting there the first day, and we have a great group going. We are staying at the Daytona Bahama House. They have rooms right on the beach for a great rate. Let me know if your going. http://daytonabahamahouse.com
I raced it 10 years ago. Seems like yesterday. Polar opposite track to my home track at loudon. The beauty of the area is offset by the all the fake bikers. I think alot more real riders go to laconia.
WORD.
It's been more & more crotch rocket-y each year lol.
Hell man, I'm gonna look for your hawk @ that Hess!! lol
Not to mention the traffic accidents. 6-10 motorcyclist seem to get themselves killed each bike week. If anyone is going be sure to wear your lid, as the morons are out! And look out for the blue hairs that look through the steering wheel.
I go with a group of buddies to escape the ice and snow. It's a little hurrah for us in the middle of our off season. It has gotten to be a little seedy in some ways, but the event is so huge and has sprawled out so far that it is what you make of it. You can avoid the nonsense, mostly. We spend quite a bit of time at the track, and our time downtown has really decreased as it has gotten to be more of a pain sitting in traffic. I want to ride, not sit in traffic listening to my fan. We enjoy the factory demos early in the week, then the races at the end. They have changed the schedule this year from what I hear, the 200 is on friday and the supercross is on saturday. From what I've read most of the accidents involve alcohol. The traffic is terrible and there are so many idiots in cages and on bikes that it's a good idea to do your drinking once the bike is parked. There are plenty of motorcyclists, it's not all greasy bikers and their favorite forms of debauchery. There's my two cents, if you go have fun and be careful!
