Unhappy WANTED:new vtr1000 engine

I am looking for a new engine for my 99 vtr1000. The cam chain broke yesterday and I am sure it would be cheaper just to replace the engine at this point. I am very heart broken as I love the bike. I don't know what else to do as I purchased the bike for only $3.5K with 25Kmiles on it two years ago. My wife knocked it over last year(with the car) and I just finished repairing everything on it and then some. New tires, bafflectomy, and other small upgrades. At this point I just took a $3Kplus hit in the pants. I am looking for low miles and something out of your grandma's hawk. I live in Hawaii and I will have to look into shipping. Thank you for any replies.

Aloha

OUCH dude. Good call on getting another motor but day-umm shipping is going to be bloody expensive to the islands.

New Engine

If you have a shop manual (often $20.00 on e-bay) and the time, you may do better financially by patiently taking the top end off the engine, checking what's damaged and getting new cam chains & replacing whatever parts are damaged with some used parts (e-bay? Los Angeles Cycle Salvage?) At least you know how your engine's been treated. There's some good tutorials on this site re: cam chains. No matter what you do engine wise, go with the manual APE cam chain tensioners. Good luck.

I agree with Chitownson. It shouldn’t cost more than your time to peek inside the engine. Who knows, maybe it’s not all that bad?

It's close to $500 to ship the engine midway cross-country ie California to Texas (when 2Phast and I were dealing on his) I bet shipping to Hawaii is 50% more. Considering this I would agree with the others that a rebuild might be the better option mechanically and financially.

Best of luck!
