+1, the time in the shop is a pain, but the costs are the real kicker...that's why many Ducs are just garage queens...
after further thought it's looking like a duc is less likely than a newer rc51.
reasons for change of thought:
maintenance
ducati na's attitude about importing bikes into canada
local dealer's inability to price a duc reasonably
rc51 is a better bike

Before I bought my Ducati I was a bit worried about the reliability of these machines because of all the bad press these bikes get.
But after 5 seasons my '05 SS1000 continues to run reliably without any problems whatsoever.
These are fine bikes.

If it's a used duc you're buying, it might have seen considerable track use (seems the thing to do among most duc owners). Beware.
Same as you, I just had to know what it's like to own one of these Italian beauties (but I didn't have the fortitude to buy a 4V model
).
No regrets, my duc has been kind to me. Duc's have a feel and sound like no other machine.

Assume the critical first servicing was done at 500 miles like it was supposed to (or don't assume, check the service records to be sure
).
That's when the dealer goes over the machine with a fine tooth comb from front to rear and charges about $1500 for the 4V models (although it's possible/advisable to manage what they do, some of the maintenance items can be DIY, means controlling the cost while still keeping the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty in effect
).
Adjusting the valve clearances and tensioning the cam belts are the most costly things to be done and require special tools. Duc's come with adjustable cam belt pulleys for precise adjustment.
Here's a sound clip of my duc with Leo Vince canisters (dB killer inserts removed) -

The tools can be purchased but the retail prices are outrageous! I seem to recall there's a gizmo that locks the cam pulleys in place for doing the adjustments and they wanted about $800 for it.
Their proprietary MATHESIS analyzer is needed for tensioning the cam belts among other things and I heard the price is around $5000.
I heard there are ways to do the adjustments without these exact tools and still get reasonably accurate results.
On the plus side, the newer duc's have maintenance intervals that are 50% longer than before.

i've heard about that belt tension tool. valve checks. 12500kms. even with the 50% longer in between maintenance intervals, they're still twice as often and about four times as pricey! yikes!
