Will rc51 guages swap easily?

I know CBR ones have been done but how diff are the rc51's?

Fairly straightforward. On my 99, I had to replace the temp sending unit with one designed for a digital dash (2nd generation VTR console). The only issue I have yet to work out is getting the tach to work. Incidentally, I replaced the RC51 cluster I had on last year (a US version) with a Canadian (metric) version last evening and will be looking to part with the one I just removed. As the tach doesn't work on the "new" cluster eith4er (this despite an assurance from teh chap who sold it to me that it worked when he removed it from his track-only RC), I have to assume the problem lay in the wiring (will get around to it either next winter or perhaps during a rainy day before then).

Of course, you have to fab an adapter plate too....

So why wouldnt the tach just hook up to the same wire the vtr dash uses for signal. I am doing an aftermarket and it works.(mostly). You got the temp to work with a 2nd gen sensor?

Does the dash have a fuel guage?

No fuel gauge on the RC... Just RLOD...

In order:
i) yes, it should, and does. Despite hooking it up this way, my tach has never worked (everything else does), which leads me to suspect a bad connection or bad hook-up on my part
ii) temp works fine, although the first sensor I bought would cause the readings to go all over the place. I replaced it with another new OEM sensor and everything is perfect since.

How did you solve the issue of the plug on the back of the gauges? Did you need the plug that went on the bike?

I was wondering the same for just getting the later model VTR gauges. Anyone have a good source for the electrical connectors?

I bought a harness to get mine i think it was $100 boo!!

So I've been looking at a gauge swap for like 3 years, and every time I start the hunt, it's the same thing.. $125 to $300 for a used gauge and no guaranteeing it even works. Then you have wiring games, plugs and harnesses to make, mod, and or buy.

I come back to the same decision, if I do this, I'll just get a NEW after market gauge and start from there.

If I could get a used gauge cluster at a decent buy in Id try the swap as many of you have... but Im just not that luck on buying used parts.

Ok so I got 07 CBR600RR guages on fleabay and also got the plug for $13 seperately.

My BIG question is what part # do I need to make the temp read correctly?? There are a few in the thermo unit and its been posted that ronayers has the 2nd gen listed wrong!!

Can anyone help?

Do you know the later model sender will be right for the rr guages? If the resistance values are the same should be easy to find the part number...

smokinjoe73 05-30-2012 05:48 PM

Well according to Ronayers the only part that changed for the 2nd gen is 37750-PC1-004 THERMO UNIT 1 $38.71

This is the VTR 2nd gen unit. I hope it will work with the rr gauge but other posts on here suggested that the 954 gauge works with it so hoping for family parity.

I dont know where to even look for resistance specs. I guess I will burn that bridge when I get to it
