WHAT GRADE FUEL DO YOU USE?

My o-chit light came on in the middle of no where. They where out of premium due to a bass tourny going on. I filled up with 89, can't tell the difference. Have I been wasting money the whole time?

LineArrayNut May 5, 2008 12:28 PM

mine runs fine on 10% ETOH 89 even

Cleveland May 5, 2008 12:38 PM

run 87 95% of the time... e'ry now and them I buy her a 'spensive 92-3 octane dinner... sometimes I even spring for Octane booster dessert..

May be my imagination, but I do notice a little difference in how she runs.. no power difference, just on start up she sputters less... not enough to matter though...

Cleveland May 5, 2008 12:40 PM

wasting money... let's see.. 4 gallons @ $.20 a gallon more.. $.80...

Not really enough to worry about is it?

sassage May 5, 2008 12:47 PM

on a relatively low compression engine, run as low of octane (87) as you can. if it knocks or sputters, go up to 89. to me, it's a waste of money to run premium unless your engine's compression ratio is higher.

an extra $0.20 for every gallon of fuel you put through a bike will add up through the year
>>>10,000 miles per year @ 35 mpg = a savings of ~$57. may not be a lot, but that can certainly buy some goodies. :bling:

Pisses me off that it cost $12, when it should be in the $5-$6 range. Either way it's a lot cheeper than driving my truck all the time.

I had that same mentality with my boat and truck(money wise). Went from $75.00 to fill up truck to $100+ - Boat went from $170 to well over $200. We got rid of the boat and bought bikes:cool:

synaptik May 5, 2008 12:49 PM

i run 87 in mine dont notice a problem ....

LineArrayNut May 5, 2008 01:12 PM

i did try 87 once, i tend to lug her in the 2-3k range sometimes and was a little leery of the noises that brought - might try it again now that the raping is a little more forceful @ the pump

darylward May 5, 2008 01:24 PM

Normally i run 93 in mine. I get around 3mpg better or more between 89 and 93.

lazn May 5, 2008 01:37 PM

I prefer the sound I get out of 91.. (what passes for high octane in AZ) But 87 works fine too. No issues with anything I have fed mine.

PRTSMN May 5, 2008 02:11 PM

91 OCTANE FOR HER. SHE RUNS ON 87 P/O USED TO USE IT. SPUTTERS A LITTLE THAT WAY IT SEEMS

gboezio May 5, 2008 03:19 PM

The 500 ohms TPS mod helps between 2 and 4 K RPM

renaisstar May 5, 2008 03:44 PM

For first year I ran 91, then I found that VTRs were designed to run on 87~~~~
been running reg. ever since and cannot tell the difference[except on the bill]........
>;~D>

Slim May 5, 2008 09:39 PM

Chalk up another 87 user here. I never bother putting in anything more because it's not worth it. If I had higher compression pistons (I wish!) and/or ignition advance (I wish more!) to warrant it then I would, but I don't, so it's 87 every time.

Price varies with region and useage. For me, putting on 400 kms/week isn't hard and considering that it would be $2.50/fill (difference between 87 and 91) it's enough through the year to put the final nail in the coffin. YMMV and all that.

Agreed with setting the TPS to 500 Ohms. I can pull her hard (like crack WOT) from 1500 rpm and she does what she's told without arguing. :p

well, now... for the record.. I was simply referring to the difference in price between regular and super (87 & 91-3)...

I too am feeling the pinch at the pump... dont get me wrong... I have a boat also, with a 33 Gallons tank and a truck with a 26 gallon tank... I dont ahve the same mentality there... Wasnt talking about the $1 plus gas has risen this year alone...

I just meant, and I think you knew this, that the $.20 difference and size of our tanks on the bikes dont make THAT big a difference...

and as for saving the difference for bling.. I'm just not THAT disciplined...

ghopki1 May 6, 2008 05:14 AM

87 here. I agree with Cleve on the slight better power feel on 93 octane. It is not good enough to justify the extra $$ though.

lowell May 6, 2008 07:11 AM

I am converting mine to run on Liposuction Fat and bacon grease. Oversupply of both in LA.....

Rear cylinder runs a bit lumpy but the backfires are impressive to keep the tailgaters from getting too close. (SPLAT)

87 octane until the conversion is finished.

Slim, what isthat about? What is its purpose? Is the TPS settable on this bike? Why?
~~thanks.

Thumper May 6, 2008 05:32 PM

92 / 93

Never buy below that unless the station is out of the good stuff

happytrack44 May 6, 2008 06:15 PM

Mine has about half 93 and half 100 race fuel. I had some in the race car kit and wanted to ride the empty Hawk. It runs like a raped ape with that or 87.
But dang, I love the smell it makes with the race fuel!

+1

Same - when I first got it ran 92 - but my mech - said just follow da manual - 87

As I sometimes commute via VTR - 150 mile R/T - thank God my company is paying for Petrol

BTW - VTR & my '00 Civic, w/ 202k :) , get about the same mpg - 32

Honda Baby

supermonie May 7, 2008 09:18 AM

This is good info I am going to have to give 87 a try I have been runnning the good stuf just to see if I notice a MPG difference.

rnb May 7, 2008 09:38 AM

i've never run 87. have run 89, but mostly 93. there is an emission sticker under my seat that calls for 91 octane. does any of your bikes have a sticker like that?

supermonie May 7, 2008 09:46 AM

I will have to check.

Some like, some don't. I don't want to say anymore about this in this thread for fear of hi-jacking. I like to be all respectable like that.

BlackHawk04 May 17, 2008 01:57 AM

hmm, i have that sticker or I read it in the manual or I dreamed about it while napping in my hammock that said or implied 91+ octane? I have an '04 and have always ran 92+ in it. I have been worried to run 87 though i'm a cheap bastard so it naggs at me everytime I get near the blackgoldispenser.
Im all stock so far so maybe i'll try the 87, but i'll always think I saw the 91+ somewhere...... save me some dowe

Zorbavtr04 May 17, 2008 05:29 AM

I use Shell 93 in the winter if I will not ride for awhile for the cleaning properties
and in the summer is Shell 87 the bike will run hotter with 93.
In the bottom of the gas tank lid there was a big R (regular gas) written with
a magic marker.
I don't notice any difference between 93 and 87, I keep the tach at 4k or higher
she seems to be happy in that range.

divingindaytona May 17, 2008 07:58 AM

Another one for 87 octane. The compression ration is so low on these bikes it doenst make sense to spend more money for gas. She runs great on 87

FTMS May 17, 2008 08:49 AM

Sticker under the seat says 91, owners manual says 86. I run 91+. It seems to lugg better at lower rpm's on the good stuff.
