VTR Dies randomly
 

OK, my friends 2003 superhawk has a problem that he drove out of the dealership with and they can't find anything wrong with it. I have ridden it several times and what I have found is that when decelerating if I pull in the clutch the bike dies. It starts right back up no problem. When I split lanes and pull in the clutch it just shuts off.

I have found that if I am accelerating and pull in the clutch as if to change gears but I don't change gears it wount shut off. Only when RPMs are dropping and clutch is engaged does it crap out.

WTF is going on here?

What's the idle rpm set at?
You may be able to fix the problem by just increasing the idle rpm by a couple hundreds.
This will lessen engine braking too, and that can make throttle control easier while cornering.

I have tried it up at 1500 rpms and 1700 rpms with the same result.

Where should the idle be on this bike?

I don't remember exactly but I think I recall reading somewhere that "computer" will cut off the bike ignition if you pull in the clutch when driving over certain speeds???? Does anyone else recall this as well? (Or am I just crazy??)

Idle is 1200 rpm. This is a common problem that was supposed to have been fixed by a change in the internal diameter of the carb boots in 2000. Some do it some don't.

AFAIK (despite lots of web theories) no one has found a perfect fix.

My 2000 VTR did something very similar. It would also die intermitently when I would pull in the clutch. I took it to my dealer and the Tech tore into it and could not find anything. He also rides a VTR so he started swapping parts from his to mine and found the rear ignition coil would quit when it would get hot. He put on a new coil problem solved. Just a Thought. It might be something to look into.

Check out this link, look for the item regarding bike stalling when pulling clutch in on the highway. Apparently it happens. Solution is not to do it.

Mine used to do it before I disabled my PAIR system. Maybe a coincidence though.

kmm996 - Personally I wouldn't take my bike to that "tech".

He isn't a mechanic he is a parts swapper - there is a big difference. Anyone can swap parts.

He may be a parts swapper, But I haven't had a problem since and that was 3 years ago. If he didn't swap the parts who knows if the problem would have been found. It fixed the problem and it has not came back. So in my book he did his job. So am I wrong in saying it was worth it?

I like the idea of having a mechanic who rides the same thing as we do. He is familiar with the bikes characteristics(and it has a few unique ones) and he is not affraid to think outside the box when normal diagnostics fail to show the problem.
