Valve shimming at what milege intervals ??
 

Just wanted to start a thread about what other members have needed to shim their valves at what milege intervals,trying to get an idea on what the VTR valves are wearing at if that makes sense..My bike has 12,500 miles and has never been checked and runs flawlessly,I've read some members have not adjusted until around 20,000 miles !

Checked mine at 26,000 and all were within spec, but if you do'nt have manual cct's that's a good excuse to check them when you install the manual cct's. I have heard around 50,000 they should need adjustment.

Yep I have the manual and will be hitting 16,000 miles next summers end and will check them then,was just curious about what other members were getting in milege before needing to adjust,I had heard it was alot of miles !!

The 2001 I just bought has 16K on it. I checked the valves when I did the CCT stopper mod. I didn't have to adjust/shim anything but the front Ex valves were just inside the limits (on the tight side).....I will prob adjust them at the end of the next riding season.

At what intervals do valves typically require adjusting on these engines? And how long does is take to remove everything needed for access?

i had 62,000 on my 98 never needed adjustment. I have 38,000 on my 2001 at last check they don't need adjustment.

You will find others that said they adjusted at all numbers of miles.
The smart thing is to check once a year or so depending on mileage...if your not bouncing off the rev limiter and keep your intake air clean you will have long valve life, once they start moving, they keep moving.

Seat, tank, oil cooler, valve covers and you can check them..... how long is dependent on you. I think I can be there in 20-30 min or less. Never timed myself but know what I charge to check um, and thats an hour.

I've got 48+k miles on my '98. I installed MCCT's when I purchased it with 8k miles on it, I checked them then and they were well within spec. I've checked them about every 12-15k miles since and they've been within specs. Last time at 48k miles the exhausts were a tad tighter and intakes were a bit looser, but still within specs. This has been the trend with mine. I ordered a set of shims as I will probably need to re-shim at the next check. I do everything from long moderate pace touring to WFO Redline canyon carving. So far it seems that these motors are pretty bullet proof if maintained i.e.; regular high quality oil changes, Etc.
As far as access, it takes me about 30-40 min. to remove everything and about the same to reassemble. I have never replace the shims but, it looks pretty straight forward. So figure another hour.

I have found over the years that the first valve check on a new engine may have some need for a valve shim change. After that, they seem to stay pretty much the same. I have raced Ducati's for years and very rarely have had to change shims. In the early years I raced a Ducati 851S. Factory manual said to check valve clearances every 1500 miles...yes 1500.
I checked them every season...changed one valve shim, exhaust...in 3 seasons of racing. Of course my bikes get a lot of attention, and frequent oil/filter changes.

I checked mine twice so far. At 25,000, they were within spec and also added manual tensioners at that time. @ 50,000 they were checked again and were still perfect. Now at over 60,000 miles and probably will not check them again until I get to six figures or have some issues.
Oh, and this bike is ridden hard. I commute 3-4 days a week 30 miles one way and I am on the rev limiter quite often
