Valve clearance

When should I check my valves?

I am looking for a list of normal maintenance to get done at 10K. I want to be proactive and get the maintenance done so I can be trouble free for next season. I hope to put another 10-15K on her next year but I can't do that if she is in the shop.

Well I didn't pull the valve covers untill 60k and only had 2 valves out of spec by .001 but YMMV

That is what I thought I would hear.:)

I bought my SH with 20k miles on it.The PO's maintenance was not evident so I did a once over. Changed all fluids, plugs, filters, etc, and checked valves.....I had two out, one only .003, and one .005, so I was glad I checked. Peace of mind is worth alot of trouble.

Valves

Probably the best thing to do is to get it done now. You don't really need it done until about 16K miles, but you said that you just bought it, so you really don't know if the previous owner had beaten the crap out of it. Valve clearance is usually proportional to how well the bike gets treated. So do it all now and you won't have to have your bike down during the riding season.

Ghopki1,

Redman is right!

Piece of mind is priceless, so if it bothers you have them checked. I checked mine at 16K and all were right in spec, but the brake & clutch fluid and coolant I pulled out looked like it had been through a war! Change out your fluids if they don't look pristine and plugs and new air filter make a huge difference too...

I'm near 10k on my '05 and valves were about dead-on. Engine is bomb-proof.

I was planning on new plugs, filters, all fluids, brakes and possibly chain-sprocket.

I was just not sure if I should get into the motor yet.

I am usually overly aggresive when it comes to preventive maintenance.
