The ultimate usd honda fork for the superhawk is???

What would you guys say? Nevermind the stock spring rates, or the color... What would you say would be the best usd fork swap for our superhawks?

Rules for this game are: it has to be a honda fork, and usd (upside down fork).

I'm excited to hear your opinions :)

James

I vote for the CBR1000RR. Its the most current and by far the most available. I have it on my bike and the bolt up is a cakewalk. Mongo radial brakes that take some getting used to.

Aw seven, thats not Honda. Not even Japanese. Swedish

Swedish, and very sweet nonetheless.....but like fine wine...you get what you pay for. I must only assume, unless someone that has these installed wants to chime in? BTW, nice lookin' bike Joe...

Not Honda, but the USDs from a 2004-2005 ZX-10R work, and allow you to keep your axle and front wheel. DLC coated tubes are an added bonus...... works for me anyhow.......

smokinjoe73 10-01-2013 06:01 AM

AHA! Mikstr, that is the best answer yet!

JamieDaugherty 10-01-2013 07:28 AM

The CBR1000RR is probably the best choice, a close second is the 929/954.

HawkRider98 10-01-2013 07:41 AM

Except for bearings, pretty much good to go?

I would suggest that you stay away from the ZX forks. They look neat but the performance is REALLY bad. You need to replace all of the valving in those forks, unlike the CBR forks where you can keep the stock rebound pistons and just replace the shim stacks.

In general, KYB parts are something to be avoided. Stick with Showa.

Yea but they're made for a CBR 1000rr, even if they're not made by Honda. Just trying to find out what's crossing the line ;). I don't even know if they'd be appropriate forks, but they're expensive!

FTL900 10-01-2013 08:23 AM

Great looking bike, Joe!

lloydievtr 10-01-2013 09:46 AM

cbr1000rr 2004-2012 and they have radial brakes .

You'd still need clip ons (or super bike bars), brake lines, brake calipers, probably a master cylinder for the brakes as well as long as you're at it, and a front fender.. Thats just some of the little stuff thats coming off the top of my head. There is a lot to a front end swap. I'm still unsure if I will swap to an inverted fork or if I will just rebuild what I have. It would be about the same price to get all the parts to make the hawks front suspension right (a little more than 400 for all the valves, springs, and seals from Race Tech) and seems to me like it would be easier to do than a complete front end swap. I know I would end up missing something and be without my bike for another month (which is why whatever I do will be a winter project if we get snow in GA this year)

Curious why you say the ZX forks are no good, as you should be replacing the valving and springs anyways for your weight, wouldn't that fix the performance issue?

Why is Showa so much better than KYB?

Looking into getting USD forks and trying get get all the info I can.

Jamie is pretty much saying that the flow though the ZX (KYB) forks are shit, with the 1000RR forks if needed you would just have to change the springs for the riders weight if need be and the shim stacks, the stock valving is sufficient.

JamieDaugherty 10-08-2013 04:13 AM

Yes, the KYB valving is so bad that you must replace both the compression and rebound pistons - basically gut the whole thing and start over. It also takes more effort to install those forks on the VTR, including special steering stem bearings. Lots of work and extra money to setup means they are not a good choice.

Showa forks are much easier to fit, in almost all cases the triples just bolt right in. At worst case only the compression valving needs replaced and the stock rebound pistons can be reused. That means they are pretty straightforward to setup so they work correctly on the VTR.

mikstr 10-08-2013 06:00 AM

I fit my KYBs using 600RR triples (same c-to as OEM triples) and used standard bearings (though I did have to get the upper triple bored out by 2mm, right Jamie? :) )

I don`t claim to be a suspension guru by any means (I leave that to Jamie) but if you are planning on having them re-sprung and re-valved anyhow (as I did, with Jamie`s valving btw, which works great), the ZX (2004-2005 only) does allow you to keep the front Wheel and rotors, thereby potentially keeping the cost down slightly. In my case, I really wanted forks with a DLC coating and the ZX fit the bill there too (in addition to, from what I have read, being quite light, supposedly lighter than Ohlins). My main concern with the ZX is that the bushings are non-replaceable; not sure how well that bodes for longevity......

Shameless plug: I have a complete 2007 cbr1000rr front end for sale. It was installed on my VTR. Ready to bolt on with apex risers and pre made radiator relocated brackets. PM me if you are interested.
