Timing off?
 

Help, I recently had CCT failure in the front cyllinder. Made a terrible slapping noise, was just at an idle and shut it off immediately. Pulled the plugs and valve covers, cranked it over by hand, timing looked good (I thought) replaced the CCT with a manual one. Put the bike back together, it will start with the choke and then acts like it runs out of gas. While it is running, if I give it any throttle at all it will immediately die, and thats as far I've gotten. Should I remove the valve covers again, recheck the timing? Any other ideas? Help!

Since these are interference engines, the "slapping noise" was the pistons hitting the valves. You most likely bent the valves. You NEED to do a compression test and or a leak down test (leak down is best). Once you do that, then report back and we can proceed with what to do.

Did you check valve clearance when the valve covers were off? That should also give you an indication. If gap is way wide may mean bent valves. I agree with CruxGNZ. Just a mild tap piston to cylinder is enough to bend the valves. It's not that bad of a job to pull the head and swap out the bent ones. Just need a decent valve spring compressor for overhead cams.

I wouldn't do anything that involves using the starter until you know that timing is good (compression test). There's a chance the CCT broke and chain didn't skip gears, but you don't want to do more damage.


That being said, did you have the tank/carbs off when replacing the CCT? Check PVLIR- the small vacuum hose attached to your petcock should be on the back nipple pointing sideways and not the breather nipple pointing down. You could have saved the valves and CCT and just not be getting any fuel flow.
