Timing Help

ok, so does anyone else think that the way to set the timing on the hawk is one of the dumbest thing ever?

i recently upgraded to manual ccts, after doing it the wrong way and having both cylinders jump timing, ive reset them to what i think is right however, the rpms break up at about 7.5 8k and on decel i get noticeably more backfiring,

so first is there any insight to this,

let me tell you what i have
*clean air filter - stock, but not new
*shortened 2 bros exhaust (cut about 10 in. out of each)
*compression - 165 front and 163 rear
*new ngk iridium ix plugs
*never removed anything past the air box, never touched the carbs i did unplug the tps but never removed it
* ape ccts, set tension the new way by measuring deflection in the chain

so, i'm wondering if you have any suggestions or if theres a easier way to set the timing than what the service manual calls for

thanks in advance

The method in the manual is the way you set the cam timing.

I suggest removing the valve covers and recheck.

done it, like 3 times the last time i set them, i actually guessed a tooth off from what looked right and it ran better if that makes any sense

I forgot to mention the part about the TPS.

did you leave it unplugged? If so, why?

the ECU uses throttle position with RPM to set the ignition timing, from the lookup table.

i had unplugged to to take one of the pair lines off but i plugged it right back in do i need to reprogram it because it was unplugged for a minute

No, you will be fine, there.

I'm starting to think you have a vacuum leak. It would cause a lean condition and backfiring on decel.

Check your vaccuum lines and be sure you have blocked off the PAIR vacuum.

the little vacuum line at the top of the pair valve was off, im going to reassemble the bike and report back

fixed the backfire, still got the flat spot, going to check the riming on the front cylinder again, its the one i changed the intake timing on, ill be back

RCVTR thanks youve been a huge help

ok, so the timing is set dead on, and i still have the rps breakup past 7k any idea as to what would be causing this

Have you checked the petcock diaphragm?

Billzilla15 08-23-2010 12:12 PM

no, i haven't is there a way to do that?
