Was riding the hawk today and all of sudden when coming up a light after changing lanes and downshifting from third to second the bike sputtered and then died. I tried getting the bike to start again and all it does is crank. Was able to get it started for a couple seconds and then died, my buddy was able to get it started four times after i pushed it to his house and when i went to try and get it to start it was doing the same thing...
Battery seems good but i havent checked yet. Replaced the R/R last fall with an upgraded one. Had the carbs rebuilt and rejetted last summer, had the great cct failure my first fall with the bike. Starting to get frustrated with the bike. The worst part is it has been running great and I rode almost 400 miles in the past week alone.

Sounds like regulator rectifier. Start the bike and check voltage across the battery terminals while running. (voltmeter is under $10 if you don't have).

That number will tell you a lot, but let the bike warm up and see if it stays consistent or at least over 13 volts. The RR cuts out intermittently so can be tricky.

I have pummeled my vtr for a zillion miles in NYC rush hour from -5 to 100*F so don't be frustrated. This bike is awesome just take a minute to get it on track and it will stay there indefinitely.

Forgot to update. A wire from the main wiring harness wascut causing the rear cylinder to go dead.

Hmm. In that case, I recommend not cutting wires. Never works out well.
