stripped a f&*#ng bolt head
 

Bike got backed into, kickstand got bent, got a new one offa ebay, stripped a bolt trying to take the old one off. 15 minute job turns into multiple days because of frustrating bullshit like this.

1a. What bolt is this? I looked it up on bikebandit but I can't positively ID it. Is it one of the $25 dollar specialty bolts?

1b. Where is the other end going to? On the bike it looks like it goes through and is connected on the other side. It also looks like this is a hinge, by which I mean if I take it out I'm worried the holes won't line up again easily.

2. How do I get the damn thing off now?

Just a tip, in the future use a "6-point" socket and you'll never strip a bolt head or nut again. It also helps to make sure the socket doesn't slip off by pushing on the ratchet head while turning.

I just checked on my bike. Its kind of tight, but if its completely round you can file or grind flats down to the next size, then use only a 6-point socket. But try a 6-point socket first. They will sometimes remove even badly rounded bolts. That's a 14 mm on my bike, an '05.

Alright, I'm confused.
Did you round off the head of the nut, or strip the threads on the bolt?

If you destroyed the threads on the bolt, I'm not sure how you did it and you will have to order a new one, or find a used one.

If you rounded off the flats on the nut, I'm with Surfer.

Thanks for the tips. I just purchased a 6pt socket and I'll try it out tonight or tomorrow.

6pt will turn it, woohoo. Thought I was completely boned for a bit there.

The bolt goes all the way through to the other side, and is held on there with a 17mm nut. I will wait until I can buy a 6pt socket for that size too before I take it out.

:thumbsup: I can't even count the times one of my Auto students was going for the Vise Grips before I told them to use a 6-point socket. Hundreds.

Alright, got the stand replaced. Took longer than expected due to the above-mentioned delays, plus the shift connector blocks the long bolt from coming out. The flange on the bolt catches the connector just enough that you have to take off the shifter to get the bolt out.

So as I took off the shifter, it is (obviously) spring loaded and snapped forward. Not hard or anything, but could things get misaligned from that? I went through all the gears with the engine off - roll tire, move shifter. Neutral is where it's supposed to be.

Am I just being paranoid or could I potentially crunch something when I take it for a test ride?
