Strange clicking/ticking sound
 

Hey guys, I was wondering if you might be able to shed some light on this for me.

I have a 2000 SuperHawk and at Idle it sounds fine. And also at high revs it sounds pretty good too.

However around 2000 - 3500 rpms there is a clicking/ticking noise that is coming from the bottom of the left side of the engine.

Any Ideas how to diagnose this or suggestions would be great.

EXHAUST LEAK?

Bottom left could very well be the left rear exhaust connection near the chain.

Bottom left? could be the waterpump... but unlikely...

Diagnosing noise over the net is less then ideal...:)

Is it bottom left front or rear? If it is front, it could be hydraulic CCT slapping, which mine does occasionally when the bike is cold.

Does yours do it when the bike is cold or warmed-up or both?

Thanks everyone. I pulled off the lower fairing and found out I do indeed have an exhaust leak at where the pipe meets the other pipe that goes up to the left muffler near the chain.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Reaper it happens most all the time lately.

There should be a pipe clamp at that connection point, if not get one and tighten it, that should take care of the leak.

There is a perishable seal at that juncture, but if you don't monkey with it or otherwise traumatize it to the point of leaking, it re-seals nicely by tightening the band clamp.

yeah I will try that tomorrow and see if it stops.

Spray some lubricating oil like wd-40 on the bolts and let it soak in for a bit before tightening. If that doesn't seal it, then a new graphite gasket is needed (assuming stock setup). Most aftermarket pipes don't have a gasket.

yeah I tightened it and it was still leaking. I think I can tighten it a bit more. Problem is as yall know the hawk is a loud bike, and my neighbors are old so I am trying to respect them.

Saturday I will see what I can do and then update yall later. If it needs a new gasket, where can I get one?
