speedometer

ok, can someone tell me about a descently priced bycycle speedo that can be mounted on the superhawk, and how to do it? can you use the bike as a powersource? I'd like one with an odometer.

marmaladedad 08-11-2005 12:22 AM

I've seen several of the Sigma Speedometers on eBay and also on the Aerostitch website. The BC1200 is the one I plan on purchasing for my SHawk project.

Re: speedometer

Mine was found in a bicycle store.
I'm using the sigma BC800. Ok to use on one bike.
BC1200 have "2 setups" allowing to use on 2 different bikes.

BC800 works until 300 km/h ...

Re: speedometer

The only issue with these is the sensor wire, depending on applicaton location, can sometimes be too short. So, some folks try to use the newer "wireless" models. Don't. They aren't designed to be around electronics and won't work with the interference.

My only "gripe" with these units is the lack of a night light. I once found a different brand (pano-ram) sold at walmart for about $20 that came with a push button light which stayed on for about 5 secs. I left it on the VFR when I sold it and then found out that wallyworld no longer sells them (grrrr). Off road companies sell this identical plastic unit with a metal guard for $80!! hmmm, coinky-dink?

Now that I've committed to memory the actual speeds the VTR speedo corresponds to, I don't really need to see it at night anymore.

Re: speedometer

You can find a night light for the sigma...Check this out! This one's from German company called Louis.

Re: speedometer

I have changed the rear sproket for a 43 tooth(2 bigger) and that seems to have had an impact on the speed reading, anyone knows if the speedometer has something to do with the RPM vs tranny gear?

I have had previous experience fitting a bicycle odo/speedo before, they work very well if set propperly, but you have to dump the stock cables and replace them with beefier ones or else your odo/speedo its going to die rather soon, the best place I found to put the magnet is to screw it to one of the front end disks, drill a small hole on the rotor,as close to the hub as possible, use locktite or safetywire, the sensor can be zip-tied to the fork, other than that you can not put the magnet on the wheel spokes, like you would do on a bicycle.

Re: speedometer

With stock speedo, speed is taken at the gearbox output. It counts the number of turns assuming sprockets are 16x41.
Since you have modify rear sprocket, the speed is now in error.
for you error is (43/16) / (41/16) = 1.0488 => 4.88%

Thank you very much,roadrun_fr,nice info.
I thought it was off by a larger amount, the bike really does respond to this treatment, though. It really brought it up to life.

roadrun_fr 08-16-2005 09:38 AM

Re: speedometer

stock speedo has an error about 5% stock sprockets .... Trip is more accurate.

So you've got a real speedo error about 10% .....

Besucher98 08-25-2005 05:40 PM

Re: speedometer

Is the change in sproket typically the only thing that throws the speedometer off?

I haven't checked to determine if the used SH I bought has different size sprockets other than stock but it sure seems that it is ready 85 or 90 when it is really 75 to 80 mph. Any one else have the same problem?

swordfish 08-25-2005 09:41 PM

Re: speedometer

yep. its a universal problem. the percentage of error is 10-11% so if it says you're doing 90, you're actually doing about 81. there is a fixit plugin at this site: http://www.blackrobotics.com/order.htm
but its kinda pricy.

caffeineracer 08-25-2005 10:55 PM

Mine reads 10mph high @ 70 (true 70 reads 80)
That's with 16/43
(Stock is 16/41)
Checked against a calibrated Sigma.

~Jeffers

AbeFM 08-26-2005 09:12 AM

that gives 8.7 or about 10% high for a stock bike, and says yours reas 14% off.

Errors would seem to be linear - but someone suggested all of them are correct at one speed. If that speed is not 0 mph, then a box like the one linked to couldn't fix it unless it's a lot more complicated than they let on. So what's the story?

I think the story is, the best solution is, a Sigma 1200 bike computer from REI's website for about $30

Re: speedometer

Shoot, I forgot to mention I had a analog speedo (2000 Super Hawk) I guess the linked item wouldn't work for me anyways? oh well, I got the sigma, i guess I had better put it on before I get a ticket for going to slow!!!

Birdoprey 08-26-2005 05:05 PM

a while back Sport Rider magazine (I think, it could of been Motorcyclist) got curious and threw all the bikes they had lying around onto the dyno to check the speedos. I'll try to find the issue and let you know which. as I recall, the hondas they tested were the worst, most optimistic, at 60mph but more accurate at 90 and even better at 120.

Re: speedometer

Actually, it's still electronic and the add on does work from what I've seen.

Re: speedometer

how does that thing work, really? Anyone actually have one? :o

AbeFM 08-27-2005 08:05 PM

1) Try out TinyURL.com - same thing, but faster, no stop over, and it dumps the new URL into your clipboard for easy pasting. WAY cool.

2) I'm thinking of putting a garage door opening in my fairing somewhere. Anyone done this and have something to share?

3) YES YES YES! I'd love to see that article

does it read in MPH as well as KM? I live in the US.

caffeineracer 08-28-2005 01:42 AM

Reads MPH as well,
Two stores in the Chicago area, so either
no shipping or free shipping if sent to store.

I think the display is larger on the 1200 than the 800 model

I think 800 has the same display... the difference is for 1200 : 2 modes/settings for 2 bikes use.

Re: speedometer

Does anybody want to share some photos and ideas on how they mounted their Sigma (or equivalent) bike speedo?

I would really like to see what works and what does not before I start drilling or gluing. :)

I found this article if this is all that we can get for future ref:

Here's mine, Sigma 1200 pick-up mount and bolt magnet.
Stock rotor bolt ground to 12mm head and drilled to magnet O.D.

Excuse the dirty bike, it gets 'rode hard and put away wet'

Sweet, I like what you have done there!!!! Looks absolutely trick and secure!

I don't suppose I could talk you into making me the bolt and trick fork / axle bolt mounting bracket??? :D I'll for sure pay you for it!!!

I'm living in house with no garage (which means no tools & no work area) right now so I have no means of making any thing custom. :(

AbeFM 09-12-2005 09:14 AM

I like his set up quite a bit, but for those of you without tools - my buddy just epoxied (perhaps JB Weld?) his magnet on and was very happy with it.

Doesn't take much to make your own. Ace hardware has the stainless sheet metal. Think Radio Shack had the magnet.
Make a template with card stock, drill it, then cut the stainless with sheet metal shears.

Lay the rotor bolt in loose vice jaws, hold a 6 point socket on the top of the bolt and hammer the socket enough to put hex witness marks on the round bolt head.
You don't need a grinder, you can file the bolt to a hex head.
Drill out the inside hex for the magnet.
Few ty-raps and your all set.

I've been using Nashbar for my bicycle stuff for years...good company with excellent return policy.

Thanks for the link - I just picked one up!

I'm not so sure I'd want a set of bicycling shorts you used for years and then returned though. I'll just buy clean ones. :-P
