Spark plug problem

Pulled the throttle too much on the old bird and the front spark plug blasted out of the threads to god knows where. Threads are now stripped. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to fix this (besides the obvious head replacement or helicoil that involves removal and drilling). I was informed that there was something similar to a helicoil I could buy, that does not require drilling. just a tap kit and you crimp, press and turn this tool into the housing. Then release and it expands, working with the minimal thread left, but expanding so it won’t come out. Any help/suggestions would be fantastic. I’m dying without my bike.

Never seen such a thread repair insert.
Perhaps ask the person that "informed" you about that type of thread repair kit.
I use TimeSert spark plug repair kit, when the need arises.
The TimeSert uses a cutter, tap and install tool.. no drill bit

But bottom line, your still making chips.. ..
My opinion, there is no way to do the task correctly that does not involve removing the head.

That in itself is not overly involved for a experienced home wrench.

Well... If the plug shot out, I'd investigate other issues than just threads... Going WOT has never ever shot a spark plug out on it's own, unless someone threaded it in there incorrectly damaging threads...

More likely you have blown the entire top end with a failed CCT...

That One Guy 07-28-2013 10:59 AM

CCT is fine. I pushed a new spark plug in and held with a special little rig of my own for the sake of start up. Runs fine. Possibility would be that the plug was not torqued properly when I had the motor built (moriwaki pistons, high compression rods and valve job). I’ll check out your way, Marquez, and see what I can do. I have already cleaned the housing out from any shavings. should be simple from here out. Tap with catch thread just a little, but the plug can push straight down with a little force.

VTR1000F 07-28-2013 12:19 PM

Is it the correct plug?

That One Guy 07-28-2013 03:23 PM

Yes. I’m not mechanically retarded. I am very handy with a wrench around a garage.

That One Guy 07-28-2013 03:27 PM

I even tried sticking the old plug from the back cylinder in it. No dice on catching thread. Guess I’m going to have to install the timesert.

VTR1000F 07-28-2013 03:41 PM

No offense, but you said you had the motor built. Thought maybe you had it built by someone who was mechanically retarded.

That One Guy 07-29-2013 03:32 PM

That’s a good possibility. It has been running fantastic until that little mishap. halfway considering parting it out or selling it right now.

Do you recommend the standard or deep hole for the front cylinder?

E.Marquez 07-29-2013 04:51 PM

Long.. the top of the sparkplug thread is 4.75" from the head top... you will need the long reach tool to get full thread engagement.

If that happens, I’ll message you. I’m trying to make some money soon on it. If anyone wants to take bike, I’ll sell it for 3k. moriwaki pistons installed with new cct. 10.0/1 compression as opposed to factory 9.4/1. makes me very happy when I goof off on the track and the power band is so much more open (tweety knows what I mean). Electric blue paint with zg screen, extended passenger pegs with integrated led blinkers drilled into the pegs. very cool looking. I have an extra back tire and extra parts laying around that will go with it.

I know they make a whole kit to rebore spark plugs on ford pickups, since they have an inherent problem with plugs melding to the heads. Its really amazing, it goes in, rebores a thread and threads in a hardened sleeve for the plug to thread into.

Not sure if it can be used on hondas. It was on the show truck u.

sailorjerry 07-30-2013 06:08 PM

Honestly though I would call a local machine shop, see if they can do a repair to the head, and just do the work yourself if you can. It's not that hard of work to get the head off and most machine shops are fairly cheap for repairs like that.

A: Triton uses a different size plug.
B: the Triton spark plug rethreader kit is nothing special, and much like the one I posted from time cert

Ok so yeah, do what Eric said, DONT give up on the whole bike because of one plug. That happened to my cbr at like 22k miles and I rode it to around 98k miles inlcluding racetrack miles. I guess I just forgot I repaired it.

That One Guy 08-10-2013 07:00 PM

I’m just too poor to buy stuff…..

That One Guy 08-10-2013 07:01 PM

if someone would buy my extra left side rear set with shift shaft and the oem turns, I would have enough to buy the timesert.

saige 08-10-2013 09:43 PM

how much is the kit.
if its more than the heads on ebay, than i would just buy this one and order a gasket and youre good to go.

It’s less for the timesert. 65 or 70

I know that eBay listing say FRONT, but that's a REAR head.

after looking at the photo for a second, youre right.

rz_racer_69 09-16-2014 04:46 PM

Does anyone have the kit they can loan me? I know I have to buy the inserts but seems like a waste to buy the kit for one cylinder head. :(
