Single Exhaust-Excessive backfiring, stuttering, etc.

check my member's page at the bottom of this post to see the bike.
back to the questions.
i believe i may be rich still. I live where it's flat and low elevation. carbs are clean, and i synced the carbs with feeler gauges. my vacuum gauges weren't cutting it.
ok so idle has been fairly lean in the past since my exhaust conversion. i believe i am currently 2 turns out on the pilot screw. it still pops periodically on idle so i need to turn it out a little more. which leads me to my questions.

does the pilot jet control decel?
to what rpm does it control fuel?
when does the main jet kick in?
will backpressure or lack thereof impact idle and midrange and wot settings?

here are my problems. when they happen that is...
sporadic (sp?) popping at idle,
excessive popping at decel (pair is removed),
stuttering from wot to part throttle engagement,
feels like winding out but no power until 9k rpm sometimes,
after stepping down jets it seemed to do it less, but i am now foggy on that,
when all works well bike pulls real hard from 6k to redline,
outside temp doesn't seem to have much effect as it does it when it's 60* F and 20* F,
choke tests are inconclusive, but dont seem to help.

do i still have too much fuel?
what is shimming the carbs? will it help?
it seems i have midrange troubles.....help!!! please.

bump

RPV-Hawk 01-29-2007 03:27 PM

No offense dude, but don't bump a post in the same day you create it.

At least give the post 24-48 hours before bumpin' :admin:

azhawk1 01-29-2007 05:08 PM

what does this whole bump thing mean sorry new to the internet forum world?

RPV-Hawk 01-29-2007 05:14 PM

"Bump" or any new text in a thread moves that thread to the top of the Forum's "Recent Threads" view.

It's usually used when a thread is several days old but doesn't have a response, or when someone wants to get more views to a thread in the hopes of getting a response.

i turned the pilot jets out another 1/8th turn this morning. i still got the hesitation once between 7-8k it was 30* F this morning and i rode for about 30 minutes.

I can't help you with the tuning problems but dude.... that exhaust is BAD ASS! Where'd you get it, how'd you do it and where can I get my can in black?? G'luck with tuning.

*edit* Never mind, I read your profile about pipe type. I'm still curious about mounting etc though.

got the can from yamaha. got the bends from autozone. welded myself. black-well i've seen carbon ones. look on ebay. be careful tho, its loud as hell, and im not sure if it has helped performance significantly. i mostly did it to save weight.

Just joined this forum and I thought I would share my recent mod, I dont have no backfire really and it seems to breath with ease.

What are those sliders? do they protect the engine covers too?

Galaxieman 02-01-2007 07:27 PM

How loud is your bike iamanonymous? With that single short Yami can, I'd expect it to cross even my threshold for obnoxious. Just a guess. Looks pretty sweet though!
