shudder under front braking
 

If I'm coming to a stop with the front brakes, say from 60mph, I notice a shudder in the front end at about 30mph or so. It's about in the middle of the braking event, and lasts briefly; in other words, braking onset is clear and solid, braking finish is clear and crisp, but in the middle there is a slight but noticeable shudder. Pads on both sides look clean and newish.

Suspension? Rebound damping? Tires look good and uncupped. Wheel balance?

Is there any movement at speeds or is it just under braking?

Because it wouldn't be balance if it were only under braking.

One thing I typically do before diagnosing any braking related problems, is I will leave the system completely intact, and basically wash the entire system in brake cleaner and then give it a go.

It might also be a warped rotor, I had that problem on one of my older bikes and it was only around 35mph it would start to do that, anywhere over or under and I wouldn't feel it because the braking pressure would over-come it. When I checked it, visually it was straight but on a runout checker it was off by like .02 degrees and that was enough to make the front end all wonky under braking.

And what is the shudder, up/down, side/side? all movement transfers differently through the front end so it's difficult to diagnose sometimes.

It does sound like it could be suspension problems, but I am by no means an expert (or all that knowledgeable on it) so if you have any questions, theres a post in the knowledge base about suspension and various adjustments that you could try!

Sounds like you need to take the calipers apart and give them a good cleaning.

And it could be partial glazing on one or both of the rotors
When you clean them, use a piece of scotch brite and brake cleaner. Won't scar the rotors.

I'll try the brakleen method. Although, could it be the <gulp> head bearing?

Not likely with the symptoms you describe. ;)
