Shock linkage lubrication, ehaust heat
 

Hi Guys,

Working on my new acquisition a '98 SuperHawk with 24K on it, I noticed how close the shock link is the the exhaust. The service manual says to "inspect" all suspension every 12K. What have you guys found, does the grease get pretty crusty in the link from the exhaust heat? How often should you renew the grease, on the 12K inspect interval or longer.

I searched for an answer in the forums but came up with zip...

My exhaust is so close to the link that a business card just slides between them, never ever had a problem.

I have greased the link on mine twice in 4 years as I think that the exhaust heat has to have an influence on the grease.

I have read about the squeaking linkage and also bearing failures due to lack of grease.

Well worth servicing the link to avoid any drama.

Guys thanks forgetting back to me so quickly! You are awesome! I'm fitting up a used but newly freshened Ohlins next weekend and will attend to the linkages then, hopefully they just need fresh grease!

When you sit on the bike, the link doe's move away from the pipe a bit, enough not to have the grease cook from the heat, but again, it's a good practice to check all moving parts and nut's & bolts all around the bike periodically, how often? At list follow the manual recommendations, or add your own schedule.
