removing right footpeg mount casting
 

wrenching Question:

I am removing right drivers footpeg mounting, which is broken at the front muffler mount.

I have started removing the subject part. the major holding force comes from a large bolt running through the swingarn and motor. It must be pulled to remove the casting.

By my reckoning, the rear wheel and swing arm are going to fall off. I'm on my way to read the manual, (which always seems like greek to me) but how do we hold up the ass end while doing stuff like this? Hang it from the ceiling by the seat subframe??? balance on a milk crate?

Yep... I've done this. I supported the bike (motor/frame) with wood blocks under the oil pan, plus I used something right under the swingarm pivot to support it when I took the pivot bolt out. It was pretty easy if I could do it!

Careful with the pan and bottom of the motor. Use a full width support, as it is thin in places and I have seen them broken.

Well what I did was grab a peice of bar stock that was a little smaller O.D. than the bolt and used it as a drift to hold everything in place while I removed the bolt (just use the drift to push the bolt out but still hold the swing arm in place) and then you push the drift out with the bolt when you re install it.

I'm really like using the hooks that I installed in the ceiling of the shop. I've done the balancing act on the pan and almost pulled the bike over backwards. I like taking the weight off then using the drift is a great idea. I also stabilize the rear of the swing arm with some small bottle jacks.

I am firm believer in immobilizing the victim :evillaugh:
