removal of rear wheel bearings
 

Hey Guys,
I need a bit of input. I had the rear wheel bearings crap out on me last weekend while I was heading to deals gap. I have removed my rear wheel as well as the sprocket side wheel bearing. I have removed what was left of the brake side bearing, well everything but the outer race. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get the outer race out of the rim? The way its pressed into the rim there is no way to get a puncnh on the back side of it to knock it out. I hate to try & pry it out as that would damage the rim.

Dremel, weld inside the race (shrinks when cools), inside diameter puller, bent drift to name a few. I have used all with success. Use which one you have the tools for.

Lots of options, all based on abilities and tools/equipment on hand.

Blind bearing puller?
Mill / grind a notch in the cup and then use a punch or chisel to knock it out?
Weld a bead across the cup in three places.. it will almost fal out.
Cut through the cup with a cut off wheel.

And just to keep things straight......
The Cup is the outer ring
The cone is the inner ring
The race is the part of the cup and cone that the rollers ride on.

Not nit picking, just that it helps if everyone is using the same terms

Also applying some heat to the wheel will make it easier to remove no matter which method you chose.

I always hate it when that happens. A small slide hammer puller, if the inside lip is exposed...based on a fair amount of experience with GM rear axle bearings.
