Regulator or Stator?

I went through the regulator dilemma a couple months ago, and am still having issues. Last time the issue seemed to be regulator, so I replaced it, and replaced the battery. The bike ran just fine afterwards for several weeks, then I got busy and didn't ride for a few weeks. When I went to ride it again, it wouldn't start. My first assumption was that it was a dead battery, so I charged it, and it rode fine again. I rode it for several days and then I noticed it was having trouble turning over when I would start it one day. The same day, I went to start it again and it wouldn't start at all. I have a couple buddies questioning whether it is the stator, but I am wondering if it's the regulator again. I see a lot of discussion about regulators on here, so I wonder if that might be it. It would be much cheaper if it is. Any advice?

99 times out of 100 it's the regulator on this bike. First, see what's happening. Test voltage of your battery across the leads with the bike on and off to see what the charging system is doing. This is very easy to do and will tell you right off the bat if it's your charging system or something is draining the battery. Any corrosion in the wires or bad plugs or unclean grounds can tax the stock R/R which should be upgraded IMO anyway.

To test the stator unplug the connector coming from it. It should have 3 yellow wires on it. Check for A/C voltage between each wire. So you should have 3 checks. If you lable them 1, 2, 3 you check 1-2, 1-3, and 2-3. Rev the bike to 3-5K RPM and the voltage sould be somewhere north of 80 volts A/C. If any leg of it is low then you've got a bad stator. If it's good, it's most likely your RR.

Did you replace it with another stock one or did you do the upgrade when the last one went out? If you replaced it with another stock one then I'd bet that's probably your issue again.
