Ah, I don't think I understood the full story then. Yep, if your fan kept the bike cool, then the thermostat is working. So, now, just to be sure, when you unplug the wire from the fan switch and touch it to the radiator, does it turn on? If this is the case, then it's probably the switch. That switch is on many bikes that Honda has made since like 1985 or something, so it should be pretty easy to find.

Edit: And the hottest fluid wouldn't even make it to your first rad if the thermostat wasn't working...

Yes, the fan works when grounded.
And the fan does cool the bike down.
I'm ordering a switch and thermostat.
Changing the switch first to see if that fixes it, because I don't feel like lifting the air box right now.

It's doesn't sound like the thermostat anyway... otherwise having the fans on manually wouldn't help...

fuzzuki 11-08-2011 04:37 AM

Yes. I agree. But I will change the thermostat over the winter anyway.

fuzzuki 11-13-2011 08:45 AM

Well?
I changed the switch and checked to make sure the thermostat is opening and the fan will still not kick in at 110c.

If the fan itself works & the fuse is good, then the only thing it could be is the temp switch on the right radiator or a bad connection.

fuzzuki 11-13-2011 09:33 AM

Must be a bad connection someplace.
I hate electrical problems.

fuzzuki 11-19-2011 12:55 PM

Yeah. It was the thermostat.
The fan now comes on at 103c.

I just went out for a test ride.
Man oh man I forgot what a fun bike this can be.
I love cracking power wheelies over stutter bumps on up hill rises.

I now have the opposite problem.
On my test ride, the temperature would not go above 84.
Most of the time it was running at 78.
Makes me wonder how long my thermostat has been going for.

But I also thought that modern thermostats were made fail safe to fail open???
Is that untrue?

By thermostat you mean on the left side of the motor between the cylenders? How could that affect the fan coming on? One controls circulation rate, the other turns the fan on at a fixed temp.

fuzzuki 11-19-2011 02:43 PM

The fan is on the opposite side.
The water was not flowing over to the other rad where the sensor is.
As far as the sensor knew, the bike was running cold.
