Quick CCT question
 

Hey guys....

Not to beat dead horses with this questions on this topic, but..... In both manuals I have, they say to use the Honda tool or make a "Key" to relieve pressure on the stock CCT before/when removing. I'm replacing with APES... do I really need the key thing or can I just unbolt the stockers not caring about relieving the tension first?

(I will be checking the valves as well and will keep an eye out for the chain skipping teeth, just want to know if there is some ridiculous reason I need to remove the CCT as described before I regret not taking the time to make the stupid key.)

a long thin flat blade screwdriver will work, take out the bolt at the tip of the tensioner, insert the screwdriver, i believe you go clockwise to loosen the tensioner, a turn or two will do, enough to relieve the tension so you can remove the unit... first, set the engine to top dead center compression, on that cylinder before you remove/replace the tensioner it's easy to do if you can see the cams, just make sure the lobes are facing away from the buckets at equal distances, (marks on the cam sprockets will help in this) and as long as you reinstall and adjust the new tensioner before you move the engine to do the other cylinder, you should have no problem with skipping teeth...

If you plan to remove the stock CCTs and not reinstall them you won't need that spring rewinding tool. After you are at TDC you just need to remove the CCT bolts and the plunger will push itself to full extension as you remove it.

Use some zip ties to lock each cam sprocket on the chain to keep things set for an easier reassembly after you do the shims.

Thanks for the info.... I figured since I wasn't reinstalling, I need not worry about the "key" tool... will let you all know once it's finished should it not work out to be the case!!!
