Problems with Battery/Dash

I have a 2003 Hawk. The battery died a week ago, recharged it with a trickle charger. It started great no problems. Drove it to work with no problems. On the way home the dash started coming on and off and resetting itself. I did not have any mechanicals problems. I turned the bike off when I got home and everything was dead. A couple days later went to turn the key bike worked and started with no problem. Once I started driving it around, the dash started resetting again. Everything starts like it should now, but once I start driving I lose everything on my dash. Any ideas what could be causing this? I am going to test the battery voltage tonight. Thank you in advance.

Yes, test the battery and the charging system (regulator rectifier operation). Download the manual if you don't have one. It's located in the knowledge base section: a forum which everyone should become familiar with as there is a wealth of info there.

Good luck.

Yeah, when the R/R goes, sometime the voltage goes way up and fry some stuff, need to check it before something blows up.

Usually the later model R/R's (2001 on iirc) with the cooling fins hold up pretty well but anything is possible. Check the battery connections and run through the manual to test the charging system and hopefully you will find its something simple. Post what you find as it may help one of us out one of these days.

I tested it last night. The connections to the battery were a little loose. I got a 12.4v reading with everything off. 13.5v reading with the bike in idle and it dropped to 11.4v at 5000 rpms. I am going to ride it tonight to see if tightening the connections fixed the problem. Thanks for the replies.
