Play in rear wheel?
 

Howdy, I'm new to this site, many projects coming up!

Check this out, On my 99, There's enough rear wheel play to worry me. I examined and put everything back into place accordingly. I can't for the life of me figure out what's causing the play. The carrier ring isn't sitting flush against the rim, there's a slight gap. It's causing the rear wheel to have minor play back and forth. The cush drives look perfectly fine, they are correct in their placement, all the bearings feel and look fine, everything is clean and appears to be fine. Any ideas????

The axle is tight right? 69 ftlbs?


Axle goes in from the left, flanged spacer inside the fork (flange out,) wheel assembly, spacer and brake carrier. Nut and washer on the right. Torque to 69 ftlbs. If you can then grab the wheel and rock it back and forth, the only answer is bearings.

The bearings should be good if they turn smoothly with no gritty feel.

a friend told me about this. He had the same problem and the hub needed to be replaced (piece that bolts to the wheel behind the sprocket)

It must be the right hand side bearing, it looks to be the culprit. But still, I don't understand why the carrier ring or whatever it's called isn't sitting flush against the rim. Again, everything is torqued to specs and properly installed. I thought the bearing inside the carrier assy was pushed in a bit causing it not sit flush against the rim, but that's not it either.

First check what you have using this exploded view.

then pry the dust covers off the three bearings to check and repack them with grease if they look OK.

If one doesn't look OK, see if it's been spun and worn out the bearing support.

You should find the problem with this approch.

I agree that it is most likely the right side bearing. Although, the fact that there is a gap makes me think that something is missing or not OE on your bike.
Make sure all of your bearings are smooth and tight.
The SH is known for destroying that right side bearing. Mine just gave up a few months ago.

So, Yes the bearings, yes plural are toast!!! Wow. So, I've got the long screwdriver out trying to pound out the bearings through the opposite side of the wheel. I know this can't be the only way to get those bearings out. Those suckers are stuck in there!

Any suggestions????????
