Part Interchangeability: What works on XXX will work on VTR1000

Hello I have another inquiry if anyone's up to it.
What parts, in general or particular, will interchange with our bikes?

I found my side stand switch to be faulty. Honda P/N: 35700-MBB-305. In my search for another one, a lot of them looked veeeery similar in fleabay images...

Which lead me to this site: Honda Motorcycle Part Numbers

According to this, would a 35700-MBA-305 for a 98' VT750 work on our bikes? How about a 35700-MBG-305 for a 99' VFR800?

RWhisen 07-09-2012 06:08 PM

There is a cross reference feature in the parts fiche I believe.

Bandit400man 07-09-2012 06:18 PM

ummm...wtf is parts fish? and where do I find it?

RWhisen 07-09-2012 06:23 PM

Fiche not fish. Wow am I THAT OLD?

No idea what a parts FISH is, but if your looking for a parts fiche you might try ronayers.com or bikebandit.com

Our bike shares clutch plates with a bunch of hondas which can save you money cuz they are offered in a kit. Found it out in the chapparral motorcycle catalog.

It seems very difficult beyond that. When I was replacing my dash & needed a fuel sender the only way to figure it out is to download the manual and find out the resistance stats on each unit. Pretty tiresome.

Bandit400man 07-09-2012 06:53 PM

ooohhh ok LOL I know those...
But you say a part cross reference is in there? Any time I check a P/N it only brings up different years of availability, not between Honda models.

Smokinjoe that sucks man...cause there's a TON of switches on fleabay for different bikes from like...5 bucks up to over 50...figured I could find one for like...an 02 CBR600 thats cheaper because more people crash them or whatever.

Bandit400man 07-09-2012 06:56 PM

An yeah parts fish LOL

Cause who's ever actually seen a real microfiche before?

That's like board drafting with a pencil and VHS :)

BeerHunter 07-09-2012 07:01 PM

I would hesitate to install a used stand switch. The new part costs 33 bucks.

Bandit400man 07-09-2012 07:21 PM

Then there's shipping and all that...just having spent 15 bucks on the neutral switch has me thinking all kinds of cheap...but I hear ya.

RWhisen 07-09-2012 07:27 PM

Why don't you just permanently bypass it then if that is too expensive?

Bandit400man 07-09-2012 07:32 PM

I thought about that. Its currently jumped right now...

But then I thought about the couple times I put my bike in gear with the stand down, and it kicked off, saying: 'dumb$$, why'd you do that?'.
And I said to myself then, I'll replace it!

aja 07-09-2012 07:35 PM

If it still turns off when you put it into gear and the side stand switch is jumped, then its not the side stand switch. Jumping the wires will disable the switch, good or bad.

On topic, I believe certain wheels are swappable also, and maybe some wheel related components, but I cant remember which years to what models.

smokinjoe73 07-09-2012 07:36 PM

For something as simple as the side stand you could sure get a similar one and adapt it. (you should see the week of work I did on the cbr fuel sender). If you have more time than money (or more fortitude) you can make almost anything work. Is it worth it tho?

Bandit400man 07-10-2012 04:30 AM

I DO have more time than money...Just wondered if another model Honda would work is all...cause there's a bunch of 600cc models out there people are breaking for cheap.

And aja, no, its workin fine now...I was talkin bout when you just forget to put it up and its built into the bike to remind you your a dumbass...:)

smokinjoe73 07-10-2012 06:54 AM

FWIW, the 07 CBR600RR does not have a sidestand light. (just the kill switch)

Bandit400man 07-10-2012 07:45 PM

Anyone know WTF a 1994 RVF750 is? Cause I just got a side stand switch for it....gonna give it a whirl an see if it works...looks pretty damn close (P/N too, just two letters off) the best I can see I may have to switch two pins for each other...mine is yel, green, grn/wht...this ones grn, yel, grn/wht. No problem. Worst case? I return it and eat the postage. lesson learned.

Keepin my fingers crossed! :)

BeerHunter 07-10-2012 07:57 PM

That is an RC45, Honda's race machine at that time.

wiki/Honda_RVF750_RC45

If it works, great. Unfortunately, it won't make your bike any faster...

Bandit400man 07-11-2012 04:54 AM

LMFAO!!!
I thought the paint job did that!
But cool, thanks. Somebody's gotta be the guinea pig, right? I'll of course follow up when it arrives in the mail...TBK it was $10 cheaper with free shipping...aka like half the stock part cost. And its new! Boo-ya!

Wicky 07-11-2012 09:45 AM

Honda Motorcycle Part Codes

Honda Parts Interchange Info

It'll probably be the same part

same as CBR1100XX blackbird 35700-MAT-305 or CBR600F4 35700-MBW-305 / 35700-MBW-306

Bandit400man 07-11-2012 10:06 AM

Hey, somebody's gotta be guinea pig, right?

And thats the cost without shipping, Eman....cycle parts nation wanted $20 for shipping! SCREW that!! Besides, when the parts guy tells me that NO other model will work, that just pushes me to really know the truth...I HATE not knowing.

But lets face it. Engineers hate to design new parts when they could just re-use a previous design that worked and is proven. So cross model parts definitely exist and are used extensively....its just actually finding them that's hard....

Either way wtf...lol i only loose out maybe...$5 on shipping it back.

In the name of science!! LOL

Bandit400man 07-16-2012 02:11 PM

Part arrived today!
Just installed and the verdict is in!
Its an exact replacement, fits perfect, albeit a slightly shorter cable...but it still was able to reach, and plugged in just fine. Didn't even have to re-pin the cables.
So there ya go!

smokinjoe73 07-16-2012 02:33 PM

Glad this ended happily. I am also frustrated when you know you can get a part but they wont tell you. Kind of like the $30 rad cap from honda even though there are $5 stant ones that fit perfectly.

I struggled with that with the fuel sender. The only way to find one with similar specs was to download the service manual and look at the ohm range.

Bandit400man 07-16-2012 02:54 PM

Hells yeah, it actually pisses me off...cause you know there's parts out there that'll work...but their all trained to 'go by the book'...

An electronic parts are tricky man...unless its proven (R1 R/R for example) I just except fate and bite the bullet...
