Crap, my water pump seal has failed. Ordered the parts this morning. The question I have is there a risk of coolant getting into the crankcase? As I recall coolant isn't a reliable lubricant. Oil in sight glass still looks fine, but....

When the water pump coolant seal fails, coolant will drain out of a weep hole before it can get to the oil seal. Have you had coolant coming out of the weep hole?

When you have your water pump removed, you'll see how it works.

Yeah the weep hole is pissing coolant. The thing that is worrisome is the coolant is brown. I don't think that it's oil because it rinses off with just water.

It could be brown from long coolant flush intervals. FYI- there are steel components inside the cooling system of our bikes, and steel rusts. That's just one of the reasons why it's not a good idea to use only water inside the cooling system on a street bike.

Fresh coolant as of a month and a half ago.

While it’s possible for the impeller seal and the oil
seal to both fail allowing coolant into the motor it’s super rare in all models and I’ve never seen it on a SH at all.

As in the right crank case cover gasket?

Yeah did this job recently. The brown is as stated probly rust and dirt from the system. Just do the fix and you should be fine.

Yes, the right side gasket.
It both seals the coolant passage from pump to motor (red circle) but it has a line of sealant that directs leaking coolant to the weep hole (green line)

as has been said, its the outside seal thats went, pretty common... just make sure if you strip the impeller shaft that you put the impeller back properly. measure it before you strip it. the seals and shaft have a little end float in them.

No offense intend, but I would not measure what is..
A it failed, so who knows what is where.
B: who knows if it was correct.//or at the end of the spec, middle, beginning...
The Service manual has the specs. and fabiostar is dead on....it has to be installed to the correct depth or the impeller chews up the cover or case...So use the manual Specs https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sup...0033160996.jpg

Ordered all the parts a couple of days ago.
Don't own a press, so I .will have to rig a substitute. Since neither cover is available new, I sure don't want to damage them. At .010" variance, not much room for mistakes there either. Really though, how hard can it be? I've f'ed simpler projects in the past, so...
I would ask the machinist that did some other work for me, but he is retired and really does work as favors, and I've used up all of mine.
