NGK iridium spark plugs
 

NGK USA's website calls out an iridium spark plug for my 98 Super Hawk but I BELIEVE the manual calls out something else. I think its a platinum plug. What are you guys running?

Stock ones should be Iridium, but I don't feel like dropping $9-15 per plug, thanks. I am running Champion plugs I got at WalMart for $2.99 and there is absolutely no difference IMHO.

OEM is the NKG DPR9EVX-9

Iridium plugs offer nothing over platinum plugs.

DPR9EIX-9 is what NGK USA calls out. DPR9EVX-9 is an NGK of the same type except it has a VX which is a high performance platinum plug. I'll go with the iridiums and let you know if I notice any change in performance.

Iridium plugs last longer but have less conductivity.

Copper has the most, then gold, then platinum, then iridium for conductivity. Longevity is the reverse order due to heat and/or corrosion.

Note* There will be no immediate noticable gains with either plug. After 40,000 miles, the iridium plug will be still strong, the copper one probably worn-out and its gap enlarged undesirably. Gas milage will be good with the iridium or platinum plug better than the copper and slightly better than the gold one after several thousand miles due to it wearing out.

I put the NGK Iridium plugs in that NGK recommends and I put a new air filter in at the same time as the plugs. I don't notice nor did I expect any change in performance and that is a good thing. BUT I do get about 4 mpg more now! I got 44.6 mpg on the last tank full. The bike only has 8k on it so I don't think the air filter could have been that dirty but I do live in a very dusty environment, Tucson AZ.

I use the iridium's as that's what I run in all my bikes. The 5545 is the stock number, and can be had at nearly any local parts store, in 1 to 2 days. Just watch out if they want to sell you ten instead of 2 or 4. I over maintain my stuff, so I don't mind the boxes of 4. If you do, see if someone else wants to buy a pair with you. I get charged $8.25, but i think they are cheaper if you go to www.ngk.com

be thankful we dont own a new ducati!!!their plugs are surface erosion and are £50 each!!!!about $80!!eeeeeeek! :shock:

Do you guys know what the gap is supposed to be for the spark plugs???? I can't find that info anywhere.

I bought my oil filter (Fram), oil (Mobil Racing 4T) 6 qt case, and Champion supermax or somesuch ridiculousness, and new coolant, and drain pans, and recycled oil jug, and funnel....at WalMart for less than 100bux. My local auto parts didn't have any of that stuff but WallMart did???? Go figger.
