Newbie Needs Help With Vtr Question
 

Hey guyS GREAT forum! I just bought a VTR 1000 at an auction, runs great, all fluids look fresh, nice bike, 30K miles.
I have heard these models are bad about timing chain tensioners breaking, At idle the bikes seems to make a little bit of noise, maybe like a faint slapping sound?, clears up with any amount of throttle, does this sound like a timing timing chain tensioner issue, valve adjustment, also can the tensioners be tightened manually or are they automatic. Thanks in advance for the help

Also, what should it run at the honda shop if i get the new tensioners installed, parts and labor? Should they adjust valves while they are in there. Thanks again.

I was quoted 2-3 hours of labor at $60/hr. There's a real good 'how-to' in the Knowledge Base Section. Here, I was feelin generous and did the work for ya.

thanks, I read the write up, I think I'm more comfortable lettin the dealership handle it, since I'm a newbie to this style motor. At least I understand how the cct works. If I get the tensioners replaced with factory ones what should I pay for parts? Also, could slack in the chain be causing the faint slapping sound I hear only at idle. Thanks again

the tell tell sound of tensioner slack, what does it sound like? should it make the sound at idle only? Thanks

They may need to be adjusted but they may have already been replaced. Usually it's a whirring sound. Should be there at any rpm but with a Sh that's subjective to your exhaust package. :lol:

I would be very uneasy if they were real ragged (growling or straining) when the bike was cold. That's a sure sign that things need to be looked at. I think 30K is the time for a valve adjustment any way.

so does anybody know about what the costs of new tensioners are? Also are the guides made of plastic? And if so do they need to be replaced? Thanks

The guides themselves can only be replaced during a major tear-down. The tensioners for both cyl. can be had for less than a hundred bucks including gaskets. Any Parts Unlimited dealer can get them for you from APE. These are manual tensioners and if the dealer advises you to go back to the stock equipment, I would find a new mechanic.
