New Chain: 520 Conversion and Brand?
Looking to replace the stock chain with 17,000 miles on the bike. I want to do a 520 conversion but I am not sure what brand of chain and sprockets should be purchased. Here is what I was looking to purchase from Kneedraggers:
$ 33.00 SprocketSpecialists Sprockets - Front Sprocket - Honda VTR1000F - 520 Chain - 583X Steel - 16 YEARS: 97-02 $ 75.00 RK 520 XSO X-Ring Chain - 120 Links $ 50.00 Sprocket Specialists Stealth Rear Sprocket - Honda VTR1000 - 520 Chain - ST8100 Stealth - 41 YEARS: 93-95 Thanks, |
Re: New Chain: 520 Conversion and Brand?
If it were me, I would stick with the steel 530 lines, the same as the ones the bike comes with.
With the amount of torque these engines have, going to a weaker chain/sprocket set will reduce the chain life, without giving too many "noticeable" advantages. Just my 2 cents. |

Re: New Chain: 520 Conversion and Brand?
I posted this in another thread on the Forum, and it seems appropriate here as well:
I went with the Vortex 520 conversion kit, one-tooth-down on the front sprocket, two-teeth-up on the rear sprocket. I've used three brands of 520-conversion chain that I consider to be top-flight and almost interchangable--for most practical applications, at least: Regina gold x-ring (arguably the best of the three), DID gold x-ring (arguably very close in quality to the Regina), and EK gold x-ring (a very close third place). cheers, --HotStreetVTR |
