Need some advice/help

Hello I'm looking for some professional expertise. I have a super hawk well to one is for parts and the other one I'm trying to have run. It's a 1998 996 superhawk but let's get to the issue at hand. I've check if the engine is seized by one put the bike in gear and pushing it back and forth, draining the oil looking for medal shavings and I have seen a issues but when I go to start the bike it makes a knocking noise and I don't know where it's coming from. So now let me explain the issue before I had gotten the bike. My older brother had it and one day it randomly turned off on him and wouldn't start again he hadn't ever done a tune up or changed the oil. So he thought the bike was no good and gave it to me recently, well the bike hadn't ran in 2yrs so I went and bought another super hawk for 300$ the was running but in horrible condition the kid fell and was afraid to ride it again so he sold it. So I've been using it for parts and I got my 996 to turn on by simply changing the spark plugs and oil but it makes a knocking noise can anyone please help thank you.

The part that concerns me is the bike "randomly turned off" and now it is knocking. Does the bike have the original CCT's (Cam Chain Tensioners)?

Can you do a compression test on the engine?

if I understand your post correctly, worst case scenario, if the engine's CCT let go and you bent valves, you can swap parts from both bikes to make one good bike.

Also, welcome!

Well no the cct never has been changed before. But I can try a compression test. I also for forgot to mention when the bike turns on and you rev the bike slightly the bike will turn off. Lastly my older brother stated that before the bike turned off on him as he was riding he'll have trouble starting the bike and would have to pop start it

If the motor is running in the other bike swap it!

Sounds to me like it could be a CCT failure on the original engine, and if this is the case an engine swap would be the most cost effective solution.

Be careful, if you go down this road you will be embarking on the arduous journey of OCMD!

Just ask Crux, he knows all about it!
