Need some Advice - Gastank removal

Yes, l'm new here, but I defected from the Hayabusa sites were I have been a regular for years... I gave up motocycles hafter a crash and the birth of my son... but, I found a local guy with a '99 Hawk that had not be run in months and would not start. The bike looked fine, so I brought it home.

I got the plugs out, very carbon fouled. I but a set I had around in, any recommendations for plugs and gaps?

The gasoline smelled terrible, so I cut off the petcock under the tank and pulled it. I tried to drain the fuel by turning it back on, but not a drop??? Any ideas on what would keep the gas from coming out even when the tank is disconnected and clearly has fuel??? THis one has me stumped.

I pulled the carbs out as far as i could and found a 185 front and 190 rear main jets. Is this close? The bike has a K&N filter and an Erion exhaust.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated. I really want the Hawk out for a RIDE!

Thanks!!!

I hope you mean you turned off the petcock! <grin>

It's vacuum operated so it won't drain without a pull on it or you could remove the petcock assembly from the tank. I'd do the latter so I could take it apart and clean it as well. You may have noticed that there are two identical rubber hoses that attach to the tank (petcock vacuum & tank vent). If you confused them during re-installation, the bike will run like crap or not start at all.

Yup, that is typical aftermarket jetting.

You can DL the service manual here. Good luck. I think a big boomin' twin is about to reawaken! :)

Spark plugs are NGK, go to the site and it will give you the part number. There has been some debate over platinum or irdium but IMHO they are the same. The gap is .035 I think.

Thanks guys. I just got it back together. Heading out to get some clean fuel. Fingers Crossed!

DPR9EIX-9 are the correct plugs. Gap is .85mm or .033".
