Need help plZ

It's cold out so I had to choke my bike to get it to start all it did was backfire really loud and now won't turn over what could be causing this I rode it earlier today ran fine like always only 18k miles

RWhisen 11-25-2013 06:04 PM

Battery dead?

Matthew Kent 11-25-2013 06:08 PM

Tried cranking it till it almost died but it's on the bat tender now I've never had this problem before

The engine won't turn over anymore? Or it turns over and just won't start? Two very different problems.

Are you running manual ccts or still factory autos?

Matthew Kent 11-26-2013 08:56 PM

Well I have an update I think it was just a vapor buildup in the cylinder that did it but it did crank up today before I hade to put her away because of the rain but it sounded like a shotgun going off and now is smells like its running rich

Matthew Kent 11-26-2013 08:59 PM

And I believe everything mech about the bike is stock any upgrades I should do?

smokinjoe73 11-26-2013 09:15 PM

Sounds like new battery time. The gunshot is just unburned gas from all the choking and cranking.

Next time try hitting the starter and then slowly pulling choke as its spinning. (not before) No idea why this works but it does.

How old is the battery? How strong was it crankng? Sounds like nothing major. Give more details.

Matthew Kent 11-26-2013 09:17 PM

Battery is about 6 months old and could prolly need replacing but it sounds real strong and is it weird that it's pushing 15 volts

smokinjoe73 11-26-2013 09:21 PM

6 months shouldnt need replacing. Its not making 15 volts. If anything, your RR is shot and allowing that much into the system. Are you measuring standing voltage?

Matthew Kent 11-26-2013 09:24 PM

Yes standing and RR? Not new to some terms lol

smokinjoe73 11-26-2013 09:28 PM

Oh, yeah, I am always the guy explaining that. RR is regulator rectifier. It controls how much voltage gets put back into the system as well as rectifying it (ac to dc).

They are the #1 sketchy thing on these bikes. Do a search on it there is tons of info. Figure you can ebay a mofset one. I use the Yamaha R1 units on my 2 vtrs.

Matthew Kent 11-26-2013 09:35 PM

I have always called it a voltage regulator lol but I'll look into is and I'm sorry to ask but what are ccts I've got about 1500 I can put into this thing or sell this bike and get a better sh

smokinjoe73 11-27-2013 05:48 AM

Mathew, if you have been riding and running it, keep the bike. This is an easy fix. But if you dont do it the battery will fail and you will have to push it home. (IF this is the problem)

Any minute someone may swoop in and give you a link, or search Regulator rectifier. You can buy plug n play replacements. You have to check voltage across the battery at rest and running. Then post results.

Well another question it has a small pop when it's running I was thinking it could be looseing compression it has viper race cans on it they are shortys it's either that or it's running rich

Carb farts, its common when you've swapped exhausts until you do the PAIR removal. there are a couple threads about it on here.

I'd come and help you out but I just looked it up. I'm an hour and a half north of atlanta and your a little more than 2 1/2 south of it

Matthew Kent 11-27-2013 11:04 AM

Okay so it's not that big of a deal I'll see about getting tht done and yea it's a bit of a drive but I hope to be getting this thing fixed up before it warms up another member kinda talked me outta selling it Maybe in the summer we can hit up some twisties

It has I've had it for only 6 months and it wasn't even running when I got it petcock issues
And I'm the low man on the totem pole when it comes to knowledge on these bikes

Download the VTR1000F Workshop manual PDF for servicing info - use this forum's search function to flesh out what needs doing and how its done.

On the UK Firestorm site we have a *** Read Me for New Members *** which is a handy reference from how to post pics to Bike Maintenance and Upgrades/Modifications. Most of it is just as applicable to the US Superhawk but its written in English :-)
