MCCT Clanking?
I changed the CCT's on the Hawk today with APE MCCT's and follow the steps that were outlined here:

I wondered if the chains were too tight, I loosened them and it didn't seem to make a difference. did you zip tie the gears? did you make sure to ONLY rotate the engine with tensioners installed?

almost sounds like your way off timing but the audio isnt the best... is your exhaust installed during the video? almost sounds like open headers as well

Exhaust is installed, mufflers as well.
I zipties the rear cams and chains when I replaced the rear. I wasn't able to get the front valve cover off with all the radiators in the way. The FT mark was lined up with the timing hole and I never heard the infamous "click" people talk about when the chain jumps. |
I can never understand how people can do this job but not remove the front valve cover.
It just doesn't make sense to want to save less than an hour of your time while risking so much damage if things go wrong. Hope you get it sorted. |
yea sounds like its out of time... time for you to take off both valve covers and check timing.
the way I adjust is to make sure the cylinder is at TDC compression, finger tight adjuster bolt and verifying that it is actually pressing on the chain gaurd (not just getting hung up on a thread), then back out the adjuster bolt about 1/4"-1/2"(forget what i did exactly last time) and lock it down... then the other cylinder I always use zipties for this procedure, getting it right on TDC is easier with spark plugs removed, and I dont have the manual on me at the moment but theres a certain amount of degrees you need to turn the engine before that FT mark is actually on TDC. |
I sure hope it's not the valves hitting the piston.
Sorry that this happened to you, but I agree with 8541Hawk, you never want to skimp on this type of thing. Before doing this, you must have known about the two different methods, right? |

Have you taken the bike back apart to find out what is happening? The thing you avoided is what you will now have to do. You will now have to take the front valve cover off to verify what relation the cams are to the crank and to also see if there was any damage (valves hitting the piston, bent valves). Sorry this happened to you. I did some research and new about the zip tie method, which I did on the rear. The instruction on this forum are no longer there so I used the text and from here and that .pdf link I posted in the original post.
The link to VTR will be helpful, I'm not registered over there, though I do know it exists. Thank you for the link. Looks like I'm going to pull the cover and retime the motor and do a compression test to see if valves are bent. If so, there might be a part out going on soon. |
So, front valve cover is off. Exhaust is 1 tooth off.

One tooth off you'll have no damage. I wouldn't even do a compression test unless it's running weird after it's buttoned up!

1. Pull the plugs 2. Put a thin rod in the plug hole, either cylinder 3. Rotate engine with rear wheel to TDC , pull the thin rod and insert a fuel line making sure it seals the plug hole. 4. Blow into the hose and if you've got the ignition TDC (the right one) both valves will be closed, your breath goes nowhere and your good to pull the cct. If your on exhaust TDC both valves will be open, your breath blows through and you turn it over again to the right TDC. 5. Install new mcct and adjust finger tight. 6. Repeat for other cylinder 7. Congratulations! You got lucky.
Now, the question on everyone's mind, did you tighten the CCT's finger tight, or while you had the valve covers off, did you make sure there was 5mm-7mm slack between the cam gears? |
