Maintenance Items & Issues
 

I'm new here and I am sure these topics have been covered in one place or another somewhere in this forum but I can't find all my answers yet.

I'm considering purchasing a 1998 Super Hawk and I'm wondering about the maintenance items. I would like to do all my own maintenance if I can. I have the basic knowledge and tools. I'm sure fuild and filter changes are basic but what about valve adjustment, carb sync, chain issues, spark plugs, etc. Are these basic and home garage issues or not a DIY?

For the most part, all can be DIY maintenance. I was looking for a thread about valve adjustment, which I found and one forum members made a home made carb sync gauge. Looked primitive but work pretty well from what I read. Maybe look a little more and you will find what your looking for. ;)

Also get the downloadable and searchable PDF Honda workshop manual (http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewto...p?f=31&t=18025), a good variety of tools and you'll be good to go.

this is a bit off topic but related nonetheless, why are most of the VTR's being bought in the early model range? Seems like there are more early models available than later models. My imagination or......? Government conspiracy? Cover up?

No conspiracy just its popularity gradually tailed off - Don't forget Honda bought out the race derived RC51 roughly halfway through the storms production run. Also it had the sportier Fireblade and tourier VFR to contend with also from Honda. But thankfully the VTRs remained relatively unchanged for quite a while with the benefit of ready access to second hand-hand spares from a long model run.

Twist- Most VTR's sold were the first year, 1998.

Tsperez- With basic tools, a garage, and some patience you can pretty much take the whole bike apart (with a few exceptions). But it's very DIY friendly in my opinion, often drawback being the less popular bike makes local parts scarce. But planning ahead voids this concern.

I thought first year was 1997

the first production years was in 1997,but in the U.S.,it starts in 98.

First production year for the US was also 1997, but it was marketed and sold as a Model Year 1998.

My Bike was produced June 1997, sold as a model year '98, 1st titled Late June 1998.
