little help, lowside crash
recently had a minor lowside crash on the hawk :/ the damage was to the left side. i crushed the left muffler (which took the brunt of the fall) and a hole was punctured on the left side (this is where i need help) i believe its the alternator. the prominent round feature similiar to the one on the right side of the bike. it has a large hex key screw in the middle and a smaller hex key to the left of that on the edge. and if it is my alternator, would there be oil in it? im not familiar with oil inside of alternators but when i crashed oil seemed to be coming from the small puncture to what i beielve is the alternator. any help is appreciated!

The cover you speak of is the alternator cover.
I know some of the guys here have repaired, or, modified their covers. If repairing is not your cup of tea, well, the classifieds are a good tool to search for a used one. |
Yes, there will be a little oil on that side. I wasn't sure when I replaced my stator (alternator), I freaked out for a minute but then read the manual and it said after removing the stator cover and replacing, top off oil as needed.

Okay good news cuz I was worried. So with there being a small crack, should I replace anything else? I havnt opened it up yet but I'm hoping it was just the cover that got damaged.

Well you will definitely need a new gasket when you take the old cover off. I personally would try to find a good condition used cover. I'm sure it's fixable but it can't be too expensive for a used one. You'll have to inspect everything else and see how it all looks. Might luck out with just the cover.

Yea when I get off work I'm going to open her up. Seems like such a small damaged spot on the cover that it couldn't have hurt anything inside. Just opened up a tiny hole which the oil leAked through. Thanks for the input man. Really helpful. I'm looking for used covers right now

I highly doubt anything inside would be damaged. On that side, it should be pretty easy to tell anyway. Put the bike in neutral and spin the crank bolt counter clockwise (the big bolt under the large hex cap). If you don't hear any scraping and it turns without mechanical resistance (you'll feel a bunch of compression resistance), you're probably good. New cover and new gasket and you'll be good!

On the alternator cover I think they come predrilled so you can access the timing covers if not it's easy to do.
