A knocking clanking noise!?

So I have just purchaced a 99 real cheap, needed some tlc but seems to have turned out good. I drove it for a few days and seemed great but today I started it and reved the motor to about 4000 rpms and when it came back down at idle it would clank/knock sometimes loud sometimes not so loud and would do it for a sec or two and stop. It didnt do this evertime i reved it but was pretty regular about it. Maybe cct? what else would do this?

I would pull the top covers so I could get to the cams and check the slack in thetiming chains just to alleviate any concern. Does it have manual or OEM CCTs?

+1 could be chain slap from cam chains if the CCTs arent doing their job...many replace the OEM CCTs with APR manual CCTs.

Also could just be a loud clutch. Put it in neutral and pull in the clutch lever to see if sound goes away...

carb fart?

jbrobinson08 03-13-2011 10:02 AM

to my knowlede they are the cct are oem. it was in neutral when i did it but i will pull the clutch to see if it changes anything. Im not familiar with bikes if I would have heard this in a car i would be like F:mad: but i have read alot of the stuff on here seems like the stuff on this motor require it to be just right............... would a carb fart be that loud?

Ok so I just fired up the bike and it instantly made the noise and did not stop when i pulled in the clutch. I turned it off and started it agian and it didnt make any noise, stopped it started agian and made the noise this entire time it didnt run smooth at all

Only one way to find out what is going on - download the workshop manual from the knowledge base section of the forum, check the valve timing and clearances, and strip/clean the carbs while you're in there (replace the pilot jets - it's easier than trying to clean them).

Sounds like a CCT going out. You might not want to run it until you find out what the problem really is.

So with some tinkering I the rear cylinder is missing would this cause the noise as well? I still need to check the front and even if the chain seems fine i am still going to replace the tensioners. the cru's seem the same but cheaper should i jsut be safe and go with apes? and thanx for all the input

I would go with manual CCTs anyway and yes a dead cylinder may cause some noises like that. Pull up the tank and check your plumbing coming off the petcock.

Possibly the front carb slide clacking. Filling a lift hole fixes this.
