Issue with neutral light detecting neutral

I've got a problem where if i have been riding for any period of time when i put the bike into neutral the neutral light does not turn on.... unless the bike is put onto it's side stand then the light comes on.

My side stand has nothing connected to it as the pervious owner disconnected it. This only started recently. I thought it was a grounding problem as the stand was a bit loose so i removed the stand assembly and tightened it up a bit however the symptoms got worse as before the neutral light would turn on the moment there was some weight on the side stand but now the light will only turn on when the bikes full weight is on it.

If someone can point me in the right direction that would be great

I would guess a loose or bad connection to the neutral switch, or just a bad neutral switch. The switch itself may not be bad, but the wire running to the indicator light may have a bad connection.
