Infrequent hesitation/clunk at idle?
 

'98 with 18K on the clock. Not jetted, but it does have an aftermarket exhaust, engine is stock otherwise.

At idle, It'll hover around 1200-1300RPMs steady and then there's something akin to a quick miss which is heard/felt through the bike like a "clunk" and then it's back to idling normally.

Other than this, the bike runs fine up through the gears and never misses under load.

I still have to change the plugs; could this be the cause?

Obviously I'm paranoid that it's the tensioner but I don't have enough experience with twins to know if the bike is making funny noises or not. Sounds fine to me :)

If it only happens when cold, then there is your problem, but if it happens at all idling, I'd say you have a dirty idle jet. One tank of carb cleaner ought to solve that, at 18k miles I would do it as routine maintenance.

You would know if you had a spark problem, as it is not dependent on revs, and you would really lose power at riding speed.

I would rule out the tensioner, though, because from what I gather, that isn't really a factor at idle.

Cheers, I'll try it with the new plugs this weekend.

If I could suggest: do only one of the solutions at a time, otherwise you'll never know what you're problem was. That's Rob Muzzy's advice not mine though ;)

Check for dirty or sticky carb slides next.

Doesn't take much dirt to make it hic-up
