Ignition switch removal
Anyone have any tricks for removing the two shear bolts that hold the ignition switch in? I used torx bits to remove one from a CBR I had with no problem. Just tapped it into the bolt to make it snug.
But with the Hawk a 40T is too small and a 45T is too big. |
A few years ago I lost my key at the local outlet shopping center. It was never found. Had no trouble removing my ignition, then I took it to the local dealer with proof I owned the bike and they made a key in no time. Pretty sure it was just allen head bolts, I could be wrong though.

Don't know of any Torx heads on a stock '99. They can be used if needed, to remove Allen heads.

The Hawk I have is an '05. Maybe they changed the bolts somewhere along the line, because they sure aren't allen heads.

On the newer bikes it's usually just a smooth ball with a litte rough metal in the centre, as it's a one-way, shear bolt... The best option for those is usually a dremel with a small cutting disc to make a slot for a screwdriver... Fiddly, but works...

Thanks Tweety, that's what I thought I would have to do. Just wanted to see if there was another way.
Thanks also to everyone else for responding! |
