How simple is replacing dash lights?

Is it basically taking the face off of the dash panel, pulling out the old ones, and putting in new lights? Also is it only something I can get via OEM parts or is it a standard bulb I could pick up somewhere else local for cheaper?

Very easy. Pull the dash, and pull the black rubber boot out for the lights you need to replace. Pull and plug, reverse. They are not part number direct for with what you can get at Walmart but 161 standard (automotive light) works great.

I recently did mine but I put LED in however for the turn signal indacators it wont work unless you put a resister inline. I found the bulbs in Pep Boys automotive.

im mostly talking about the lights behind the speedo, tach, and temp gauges. although i figure do the turn signals, sidestand, highbeam, and neutral lights too while im in there.

Yes that was what i was talking about too i replaced them all except the turn signals there all the same bulb. It also made my dash a little brighter.

Also on another note you do have to pull the dash out to get to the bulbs there in rubber boots on the back side.

also is it just one bulb per gauge? i see on the parts fiche 9 bulbs in all so 1. oil light 2. left turn 3. right turn 4. high beam 5. neutral 6. sidestand so that makes 7. speedo 8.tach and 9. temp

but it seems like the speedo and tach at least should have more than one?

Yes there is nine I think there is two per gauge from what I can remember

Undo 3 bolts around the console and you should have room to get behind the dash.

I did my VFR and loved it!! I replaced the bulbs with LED bulbs, and they're a little brighter. I used the very light blue (cool white), and the color difference is barely noticeable. I replaced all the dash bulbs... signal indicators and everything. They have 6 colors available (including black light), so if you want blue, red, green, or amber, it's just as easy to do. I selected the 90 degree spread pattern, not the 32, since I want the light to spread as much as possible within the gauges.

These bulbs are $2.50 each, and I just ordered 8 for the SH. Maybe i needed 9, but I counted 8 and ordered 8, so if I'm short one, I'll deal with that later. But they look great on the VFR, so I'm doing the hawk as well.

If you change your turn signals to LED and need to modify the flasher, use this one for $9. It plugged right into the existing wiring on my Suzuki Bandit 600 to replace the original flasher, so no modding, cutting, or soldering was required. The most difficult part about the whole thing was finding the original flasher on the bike- seriously.
I've heard it matches up with other jap bikes just as easily. LED flashing problem solved.

how do you get the gauge needles off to remove the gauge faceplates? i dont wanna force it off if thats not how it works im doing it right now

Nevermind I figured out you pull the bulbs out from the back. I used 168 auto lights from pep boys and they work great. Nice and bright!

Anybody found a direct replacement relay for the VTR? I got one for my integrated taillight but now I can't seem to find them anymore.
